Summary of Duties 

The Glacier Peak Institute Extension Coordinator provides oversight and leadership for the Glacier Peak Institute (GPI) in the Darrington/Glacier Peak region of Snohomish County. As part of the WSUExtension 4-H Youth Development Program, GPI delivers outdoor experiences to create effective positive youth development opportunities. The GPI Extension Coordinator is responsible for science-based curriculum development, program development, and education in natural resources and STEM.

Duties include long-term planning, budgeting, and overseeing volunteer and college intern delivery efforts serving youth outside of the 4-H club system. This oversight involves ensuring all activities conform with WSU Extension policies and procedures, and specifically the WSU 4-H Youth Development Program.

This is a half-time salaried position, with full benefits (health care, prorated holiday and sick leave) provided by WSU. There is potential for the position to extend beyond the stated period of employment upon renewed funding.

Required Qualifications

A Bachelor’s degree in a relevant extension program discipline and two (2) years of related program experience. Any combination of relevant education and experience may be substituted for the educational requirement on a year-for-year basis.

Additional Requirements

  • Employment is contingent upon passing the WSU 4-H Youth Development/Child Protection screening process.
  • While using a private vehicle for official business, the successful candidate must have current automobile liability insurance (meeting the requirements described in RCW 46.30.020 and RCW 46.29.090).
  • Possession of, or ability to obtain by time of hire, a valid driver’s license.
  • First Aid certification by time of employment.
  • Demonstrated work experience and proficiency using Microsoft Word, Excel, and Outlook and Social Media communications.
  • Ability to work in a variety of outdoor weather conditions. Ability to remain alert while driving.
  • The ability to work flexible hours that includes evenings, weekends, and overnight travel is expected and required.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Familiarity with the issues and communities of the Glacier Peak region (NE Snohomish County Cascade Foothills).
  • Skills, knowledge and training in youth development, and natural resource curriculum development and delivery related to outdoor environments.
  • Demonstrated experience overseeing long-term adult volunteers, community leadership boards, and college and high school level internships.
  • Experience delegating duties to boards, volunteers, and interns in appropriate manners.
  • Experience and ability to work as a team member with staff and volunteers.
  • Experience working/collaborating with multiple public agencies, NGOs, and individuals in partnerships.
  • Knowledge of, and/or experience with, 4-H youth development programs.
  • Knowledge of, and/or experience with, program assessment and evaluation.
  • Demonstrated ability to use a computer.
  • Strong demonstrated written skills requiring limited editing and supervision in preparing reports, evaluations, synthesis of a broad range of materials, and effective written conveyance of program information to the public and program participants.
  • Strong demonstrated verbal communication and listening skills: public speaking, effective conveyance of program information to the public, program participants, and decision-makers.
  • Ability to work and think both independently and to work as a team member.
  • Familiarity with social media.
