Berkeley Lab’s Earth & Environmental Sciences Division has an opening for a Research Assistant. The LBNL Hydrology and Isotope Labs are seeking a Research Assistant who will participate in activities related to multiple endeavors including but not limited to: 1) work in an isotope lab as a laboratory assistant, 2) field work in California watersheds, and 3) extensive data analysis using the R coding language. The successful candidate will work alongside PIs Newcomer and Conrad to collect soil, water and gas samples from various research and help with analyses of the chemical and isotopic compositions of these samples and others. In addition, the incumbent will assist with collating the data and together with other physicochemical measurements (e.g. weather, hydrological, and remote sensing data) for interpretation of the results.
What You Will Do:
- Willingness to learn a variety of laboratory analytical methods.
- Expertise in R language and code development.
- Ability and desire to help with field sampling projects.
Additional Responsibilities as needed:
- Familiarity with scientific methods and hypothesis development.
What is Required:
- Minimum Bachelor degree in Environmental, Earth and Planetary Science, or a related field, or one year’s relevant experience.
- Strong interest in supporting researchers in ecosystem and climate sciences.
- Expertise in the above responsibilities.
- Expertise in data handling and unsupervised R code development.
- Excellent lab skills and an ability to work unsupervised in the laboratory.
Additional Desired Qualifications:
- Ability to carry out field work in riverine systems (long days, potentially arduous conditions).

Notes:
- This is a full time, 10 months, term appointment with the possibility of extension or conversion to Career appointment based upon satisfactory job performance, continuing availability of funds and ongoing operational needs.
- Full-time, M-F, non-exempt (hourly paid) from overtime pay.
- Salary will be determined based on range by collective bargaining agreement.
