The Director of Sustainability leads the development and execution of a campus-wide strategic sustainability initiative, integrating sustainability throughout the campus and curriculum. This position ensures that the College’s sustainability efforts enhance and support the long-term interests of the College. Responsible for positioning Babson as a thought-leader in sustainability. The Director works closely with relevant stakeholders including staff, faculty, students, alums, and outside constituents to promote, engage, and improve sustainability initiatives, culture, and pedagogy throughout the Babson community.
Key Responsibilities:
- Develop, implement, and direct college-wide sustainability efforts in order to embed sustainability as a core value across all functions and areas of the College. Responsible for identifying, developing, and implementing new–and further promoting existing—campus-wide sustainability programs by coordinating academic, research, operations, and student sustainability activities that align with the College’s commitment to sustainability.
- Create short and long-term strategic plans to integrate sustainability principles into the operational functions of the institution through the following:
- Identify and engage relevant stakeholders and champions including students, faculty, staff, alumni, external partners, and local representatives to implement approved projects and plans;
- Collaborate with campus departments such as the foundry, Lewis Institute, and BOW to develop a coordinated strategy for implementing a college-wide sustainability plan and to continue sustainability projects and initiatives across Babson, Olin, and Wellesley Colleges;
- Work closely with Sorenson and other appropriate stakeholders to integrate sustainability into the College’s arts programs;
- Consistently review, analyze, and assess campus sustainability programming to determine effectiveness and revise or rework initiatives as needed.
- Evaluate existing Climate Change Commitment, STARS, LEED, and other external sustainability benchmarks and measures to determine strategic alignment and inform future level of participations.
- Evaluate energy, water, and waste data to determine potential savings and provide cost/benefit analysis of operating and capital spending in support of efficiency projects. Research new initiatives and track progress.
- Publicize, promote, and communicate the College’s sustainability efforts within and outside of the campus community in an effort raise Babson’s sustainability profile to attract students, faculty, staff, and funding. Maintain a sustainability web page and determine other appropriate communications avenues to provide the internal and external communities with regular updates regarding Babson’s sustainability initiatives.
- Serve as the central point of contact for external groups and vendors such as Wellesley Sustainable Energy Committee.
- Develop and promote a culture of conservation on campus among students, faculty, and staff to achieve reductions in energy usage, solid waste disposal, and water consumption.
- Manage student engagement, including supporting student projects and learning initiatives and events and programs aimed at increasing student participation in sustainability initiatives.
- Oversee campus electric vehicle charging program and charging station operation.
- Assumes additional responsibilities as required.

Minimum Level of Education Required:
Master’s degree in related field required

- At least 10+ years of experience.
- Knowledge of environmental issues and strategies.
- Demonstrated strategic, pragmatic, analytical, and creative problem solving skills.
- Demonstrated ability to manage multiple projects, work with students, and work collaboratively with a wide range of stakeholders.
- Excellent written and verbal communications skills.
- Communications experience in digital and print media.
- Excellent interpersonal skills; highly collaborative.
- Experience building communities and working with diverse populations such as alumni, volunteers, staff, faculty, external vendors, and outside organizations.
- Program design and facilitation experience.
- Envisions and proposes new methods to perform tasks that support ET&A; takes thoughtful risks; and accepts new and ongoing initiatives, objectives, and solutions to gain sought-after results.
- Anticipates and embraces change; demonstrates willingness to achieve, acquire, and utilize new skills and challenging tasks; and is flexible in changing conditions.
