Wilderness Campaigner; Environmental Action Committee; West Marin, CA

JOB DESCRIPTION:  Wilderness Campaigner

BACKGROUND

Environmental Action Committee

The Environmental Action Committee (EAC) of West Marin is a grassroots group dedicated to the protection and appreciation of the environment and rural character of West Marin, the rural, coastal area of Marin County, just north of the Golden Gate. EAC was founded in 1971 by a group of citizens who wanted to protect the region from immediate threats and to foster a wider understanding of its unique qualities. EAC works for clean air, pure waters, healthy ecosystems, a diverse and thriving native flora and fauna, and the preservation of a rural, community spirit.

Drakes Estero is in the ecological heart of Point Reyes National Seashore. This serene and biodiverse estuary, the only marine wilderness on the west coast, and our beloved Point Reyes are under threat by an existing commercial oyster company which lease is set to expire next year. The company is fighting to remain, which could set a terrible precedent for our nation’s wildernesses. EAC is building a national coalition to submit comments to the Draft Environmental Impact Statement (DEIS) – which the National Park Service will release in the next couple of weeks – as well as to communicate to Interior Secretary Salazar that we must not allow commercial operations in federal wilderness.
