FISH & WILDLIFE BIOLOGIST 1
(Non-Permanent)
The Department of Fish and Wildlife is recruiting to fill one full time, non-permanent Fish & Wildlife Biologist 1 position located in the Wildlife Program, Region 2.  The duty station for this position is located at 1550 Alder St. NE, Ephrata.

Under general direction, this position assists the Private Lands Biologist with technical support to a resource management program by gathering and/or reviewing data for land management of privately- and state-owned lands.

Duties

The incumbent performs a variety of technical duties related to fostering strong relationships between WDFW and private land owners, promoting private lands hunting access programs, and creating and maintaining fish and wildlife habitat on private lands. Specific job duties include:

Create and maintain list of all Region 2 Hunter Access contracts and properties.

  • Using MS Excel and other database management software to compile, double check, and maintain list of current Hunter Access contracts and associated properties. Working with supervisor, other Private Lands staff, and landowners to ensure contract data is correct.
  • Using ESRI ArcMap GIS software and other software to create and update hunter access databases and geodatabases. Working with supervisor, other Private Lands staff, and landowners to ensure contract data is correct.
  • Updating and maintaining all Hunter Access property information for Region 2 Hunter Access contracts published on WDFW’s website.

Survey and update all Hunter Access property signage in Region 2.

  • Ground-truthing hunter access contract legal descriptions; ensuring that all properties are signed appropriately; and correcting signage errors.
  • Monitoring public use of the area; maintaining good safety and public relations practices; responding to a variety of public fish and wildlife inquiries or complaints; and, advising enforcement personnel of potentially illegal or disruptive actions.

Wildlife Habitat/Food Plot Implementation and Maintenance.

  • Assisting with the implementation of fish and wildlife habitat projects on private lands. Projects will focus on shrub-steppe habitats. The incumbent will have a working knowledge of the following topics: the ability to identify and survey native and invasive plant and wildlife species, plant and wildlife habitat requirements, and the ability to collect and organize habitat and wildlife data.
  • Performing other duties as assigned.

Qualifications

Qualifications:

  • Three years of experience or college level course work in the field of fish, wildlife or habitat management, agriculture, forestry or natural sciences.
  • Must possess a current valid driver’s license.
  • Must be at least 18 years of age at time of appointment.

Desired Qualifications:

  • High school graduation or GED and three months of natural resource related labor experience.
  • Extensive experience using Esri Arcmap GIS software, hand-help GPS units, and MS Office Suite (namely Excel and OneNote).
  • Two years of college level GIS courses including 12 credits in GIS related course work.

Supplemental Information

Working Conditions:
Work Setting, including hazards-Work will be in the office and at a computer station 40-60% of time depending rate of progress. The remainder of work will be in the field, often in inclement weather conditions(i.e. heat, rain, cold, snow) and difficult terrain (e.g. rocky, steep).
Schedule-Primarily 8-5 M-F with occasional weekends.
Tools and Equipment-Must be able to safely operate motor vehicles, ATVs, and other hand and power tools and as needed.
Customer Interactions-Must be able to communicate effectively with the public and cooperating landowners

This position is in the bargaining unit represented by the Washington Association of Fish & Wildlife Professionals and is subject to the terms of the Collective Bargaining Agreement between the State of Washington, Department of Fish & Wildlife, and the Washington Association of Fish & Wildlife Professionals.
