YOUR POSITION WITH TNC
The Preserve Assistant maintains preserve areas frequented by the visiting public and performs trail management activities. The Preserve Assistant will assist with the tasks associated with biological and property monitoring, habitat restoration, maintaining trails, mowing, trimming, trash pick-up, posting signage, interacting with visitors, and invasive species removal. The Preserve Assistant works closely with stewardship staff and volunteers and is directly supervised by the Preserves Manager. The position is full time, short term, (35 hours per week) and is paid hourly. It begins on April 15, 2019 and terminates August 30, 2019.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS
Maintain preserve trails, entrances, and facilities including mowing, trimming, and posting signage.
Work with Preserve Manager to implement specific projects at preserves.
Conduct regular monitoring of preserves to detect and remedy problems (safety hazards, trespass, vandalism, trail erosion). Deals with problems as they arise on preserves.
Communicate regularly with supervisor, stewardship staff, and site volunteers, and maintain a detailed logbook of monitoring and stewardship activities.
Coordinate volunteer workdays, assist with field trips.
Interacts with preserve visitors by providing information, promoting the Conservancy, answering questions, and enforcing preserve policies.
Assists with biological monitoring, and other land management tasks as necessary.
RESPONSIBILITIES AND SCOPE
May interact with visitors and preserve neighbors.
May supervise volunteers.
Works under close or infrequent supervision.
May work in variable weather conditions, at remote locations for long periods of time in isolated settings, on difficult and hazardous terrain and under physically demanding circumstances.
Requires considerable physical exertion and/or muscular strain.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
High school diploma or GED and 6 months of related experience
Experience operating various types of equipment in a safe and efficient manner (e.g. lawn mower, chainsaw, brush blade, weed wacker, or similar equipment).
Must be able to obtain related licenses or certifications as required. (e.g. First Aid, CPR).
DESIRED QUALIFICATIONS
Multi-lingual skills and multi-cultural or cross-cultural experience appreciated.
Ability to follow instructions from colleagues/coworkers/team members.
Ability to work in a team environment.
Ability to obtain a driver’s license, and maintain a good driving record. Experience driving pickup trucks.
Ability to deal with the general public in a friendly, outgoing and professional manner.
Basic carpentry and painting skills essential.
Mechanical skills preferred.
Ability to recognize plant and animal species as required to complete preserve management preferred.

This position requires a valid driver’s license and compliance with the Conservancy’s Auto Safety Program.
