The Natural Resources and Permitting Unit, a group within the Environment, Land, and Licensing Business Unit, is responsible for overseeing implementation of environmental mitigation and protection measures for the Skagit and Boundary Hydroelectric Projects and complying with environmental permitting requirements for capital improvement, operation, and maintenance projects for our electrical generation and distribution system. This includes management of 11,000 acres of habitat lands and many miles of transmission lines.
The intern in this role will be responsible for assisting a team of ecologists and permitting coordinators with mapping and collecting habitat data; analyzing data; researching baseline conditions of project sites; report writing; working with community-based stewardship groups; designing and implementing restoration plans; and assisting with environmental permitting.
Job Responsibilities:
During this internship, the intern will be specifically responsible for:
- Assist with developing and maintaining GIS and tabular database of habitat conditions, management activities, and wildlife use of project lands for the Skagit and Boundary Hydroelectric Projects
- Assist staff with habitat restoration measures on transmission rights-of-way, riparian areas, and habitat lands, which will involve mapping vegetation, developing targets, evaluating restoration projects, and collecting data on habitat
- Assist staff with native and invasive/weed plant surveys
- Assist staff with wetland delineations and ratings
- Assist with field data collection including filling out data forms and use of GPS and GIS to map vegetation and various habitats
- Assist with data analysis
This internship will benefit the student through the following learning outcomes:
- Gain experience working with land management and habitat restoration issues in urban and remote areas of Washington
- Gain experience implementing community-based stewardship projects
- Expand data collection and analysis skills
- Gain knowledge of federal, state, and local environmental regulations and permitting processes
- Learn best management practices for protection of fish and wildlife habitats
Qualifications:
Education: This position is open to senior undergraduate students and graduate students (as of the start of the internship) studying toward an undergraduate or graduate degree in environmental science, ecology, environmental horticulture, forestry, botany, natural resources management, GIS, or related field. .
Undergraduate students must possess at least a 2.0 GPA at the time of application and throughout the internship. Graduate students must possess and maintain a 3.0 GPA. The student must be enrolled in accredited college courses, with a part-time or full-time course load, leading to a degree or certificate relevant to the internship.
Desired Qualifications: GPS, GIS, statistics, plant identification, restoration ecology, wetland delineation, technical writing.

Internship Duration and Hours:
The timeframe of the internship will be May/June 2019 to June 2020.The candidate must be available to work up to 20 hours/week when classes are in session and will have flexibility to work up to 40 hours during academic breaks. Work hours will be flexible to accommodate the intern’s academic schedule.
