Natural Resource Worker 2
(Non-permanent; Full-time)

The Washington Department of Fish and Wildlife is recruiting to fill three (3) full time, nonpermanent Natural Resource Worker 2 positions located in the Wildlife Program, Region 2, Douglas County Wildlife Area Complex.  The duty station is 54 Moe Road, Brewster, located in Douglas County. The employment period is anticipated to start April 15, 2019 and end November 15, 2019.

These positions will assist with preforming maintenance and habitat enhancement projects on the Douglas County Wildlife Area Complex (Sagebrush Flat, Big Bend and Wells Wildlife Areas). Employment period is up to 8 months depending upon funding availability.  The incumbents will assist with weed control and other habitat management activities on the wildlife areas.

Duties

Vegetation Management:

  • Weed control activities.  This includes chemical, cultural, and mechanical means using a variety of vehicles and equipment. Use backpack sprayers, ATV, UTV, truck, and tractor mounted sprayers. Use of herbicides will occur under the supervision of licensed applicators.  Work safely and use good judgement in remote locations.

Equipment and Vehicle Operation:

  • Safely and competently, operate and maintain tractors, trailers, ATVs, UTVs, trucks, farm implements, gas-powered and hand tools. Safely operate trucks, trailers, and equipment in off-road situations. Assist with minor repair and maintenance of all equipment and vehicles.

Habitat Maintenance:

  • Assist with habitat maintenance and restoration projects including soil preparation, mowing, planting shrubs/trees, seeding, maintaining irrigation systems, using tractor, ATV, UTV, and implements.

Fence Maintenance and Construction:

  • Maintain and repair stock and deer fence. Repair holes, replace staples, brace old posts, install new posts, and build rock jacks. Safely use a variety of hand tools including hammer, shovel, wire cutters, tamping bars, hand saws, and chainsaws to accomplish these tasks.

Qualifications
Graduation from high school graduation or GED and three months of natural resource related labor experience.
OR
One year as a Natural Resource Worker 1.
Note: Must be at least 18 years of age at time of appointment.
Note: Must possess a current valid driver’s license.

Preferred
One year in natural resource related labor experience

Desired Qualifications

  • Experience with four-wheel drive vehicles, farm equipment, ATVs and UTVs.
  • Experience in building and equipment maintenance, construction, or repair work.
  • Experience using vehicles and equipment such as pumps, small engines, and tractors, etc.
  • Critical thinking and the ability to make decisions based on the best available information.
  • Working knowledge and experience with a wide variety of hand and power tools (chainsaws, weedeaters, water pumps, drills, hammers, socket sets, wrenches, etc.)
  • A valid Washington or other State Driver’s License

Experience is based on full time equivalency (i.e., 40 or more hours/week).  Part time work is prorated (e.g., 20 hours/week for 6 years = 3 years of experience). Do not count experience that was a part of your educational requirements.

Supplemental Information

Working Conditions
The employee is expected to spend the majority of their time working in the field under sometimes difficult conditions.  Weather conditions can vary from freezing to over 100 degrees F, and terrain is steep and rocky.  Other hazards include venemous reptiles, biting insects, and poisonous plants.  Employees must be capable of lifting and carrying up to 50 pounds over steep, rugged terrain in hot or cold weather to conduct maintenance, weed control and habitat enhancement work.
