Position Available – Boating Programs Manager

Puget Soundkeeper (Soundkeeper) seeks qualified applicants for a full-time Boating Programs Manager position. The Boating Programs Manager will manage Puget Soundkeeper’s Clean Marina Washington certification program to promote pollution prevention to Puget Sound area marinas and the boating public. The Boating Programs Manager will also conduct Puget Soundkeeper’s regular boat patrols aboard small power vessels and kayaks, managing boating safety, equipment and training for the organization. This staff member also participates in on-the-water clean-up and monitoring activities, and may work with policy staff on initiatives related to vessel impacts on our waterways.

Puget Soundkeeper’s mission is to protect and preserve the waters of Puget Sound. Soundkeeper works to meaningfully decrease pollutants reaching the Sound by monitoring water quality, enforcing clean water laws, improving policies and regulations, preventing pollution and cleaning up our local waterways. The successful applicant will demonstrate a commitment to this work and will be called upon to represent the organization to donors, vendors, agencies and collaborating organizations. This is a full-time position with paid holidays, vacation and sick time accrual, medical, dental, and vision insurance, and an employee-funded 403(b) plan.

Primary Responsibilities

Skipper Soundkeeper Boat patrols and oversee and assist Stewardship Coordinator with kayak patrols

Manage Clean Marina Washington program, including grant management, steering committee, outreach, site visits, and materials and messaging development, certifications and renewals

Deliver Clean Boating Education at outreach events, and help promote implementation of the Puget Sound No Discharge Zone

Act as safety supervisor for all Soundkeeper on-water activities

Manage boating safety training for staff and volunteers

Participate in boat and kayak clean-ups, ensuring all volunteers have a safe and educational experience

Facilitate and steward organizational partnerships

Develop and maintain Clean Marina and clean boating program materials, and contribute content for newsletters, blog, Social Media channels and

Soundkeeper’s website

Assist in the preparation of project specific funding applications and direct outreach to corporate sponsorship prospects

Preferred Qualifications

5 years experience in operation of motorized and human-powered watercraft, inland navigation and boating safety systems. Experience with vessels up to 25’, 250hp preferred.

Coast Guard Captain’s License preferred. Washington Mandatory Boating Safety

Education Card is a minimum requirement.

Experience with vehicle trailer towing and maintenance

Kayak, canoe and/or whitewater experience

Desire to work outside in varying weather conditions

Experience developing effective program materials and identifying key audiences, messaging, and tactics that support project goals

Experience with work site safety and/or pollution prevention a plus

Strong communications skills with an ability to communicate clearly in person and in writing to both internal and external audiences

Experience in cross-cultural communications, comfort speaking to diverse audiences, strong interest in advancing equity in the environmental movement, and an understanding of systemic barriers to participation

Growth mindset, interest in trying new things, learning from mistakes, and developing leadership and collaboration skills

Independent self-starter who works well in a collaborative, fast-pacedenvironment

Able to manage a variety of projects with an excellent attention to detail and logistical planning

Interest in storytelling and a creative thinker. Ability to share scientific research, studies, and data to audiences of all ages.

Some experience with environmental issues, especially relating to water quality, source control and Puget Sound topics is preferred. Aptitude for quickly grasping technical information and the ability to translate scientific data into compelling materials for general audiences.

Experience with standard office software, database management and social media tools

Passion for Puget Soundkeeper’s mission

Ability to reliably and regularly arrange motor vehicle for travel around (and occasionally outside) Western Washington (mileage reimbursed).

Willing to work some evenings and weekends as required

Compensation

Salary range: $48,000-$58,000, depending on experience (full time, exempt position)
