Naturalist (seasonal)

JOB SUMMARY
The seasonal Naturalist serves in a front-line position during our peak visitor season by staffing the Nature Center entrance and main exhibit hall. The naturalist is responsible for engaging visitors with a high level of customer service while providing a rich educational experience for all. This position also provides support for educational programs by co-leading summer camps, family programs, and other activities.

This is a seasonal (mid-May through mid-September) position scheduled for 40 hours/week. Work will include at least one weekend day per week and may include holidays. Compensation starts at $13/hour. Two positions are available for the summer season. Anticipated start date is May 15, 2019.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Perform all of the Nature Center’s Visitor Service duties including greeting visitors; processing admissions, memberships, and retail sales; opening and closing the front desk; and responding to visitor inquiries by phone, email, and in person.
  • Engage visitors (ranging from children to adults) in the Nature Center and on grounds by providing roving interpretation; presenting educational programs; and leading activities and tours.
  • Co-lead summer nature camp programs. Assists with development of activities for programs.
  • Participate in daily animal husbandry tasks including cleaning raptor enclosures and herp habitats; preparing food and feeding; and ensuring that policies and protocols are followed consistently.
  • Assist with the planning and execution of Nature Center special events.
  • Represent the Nature Center at offsite outreach events such as community fairs, festivals, and other events.
  • Assist with other projects in the Nature Center as assigned.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
Education and Experience

  • Bachelor’s degree (or working toward a degree) in biology, environmental sciences, education, or related field.
  • Previous experience as a naturalist, outdoor educator, or similar position, is highly preferred.
  • Working knowledge of local flora and fauna.
  • Previous experience teaching, leading public programs, public speaking, or customer service is valued.

  • Must be able to sit or stand for extended periods of time and lift up to 50lbs.
  • Must be able to climb stairs.
  • Must be able to work outdoors in hot, cold, wet and/or dry conditions and engage in sustained physical activity throughout the day during all seasons.

Certifications, Licenses, and/or Registrations:

  • Must have a valid driver’s license, dependable vehicle, and be willing to travel in the region for offsite programming.
  • Criminal background check and driving record.
