Marine Mammal Department Intern – Oregon Coast Aquarium – Newport, OR

Position: Marine Mammal Department Intern; Reports to: Curator of Marine Mammals

Job Summary: This position is designed to introduce basic animal care, training and husbandry skills. Candidate is responsible for assisting in the daily care and maintenance of the Aquarium’s marine mammals and the marine mammal exhibits.

Internship Dates: Winter- January 5, 2012- April 9, 2012. (non-paid); Possible extension to May or June

Job Requirements:

·       Must be able to understand and follow written and oral instruction.

·       Must be agile with a good sense of balance in order to maneuver around the exhibits.

·       Must be able to lift 75 pounds.

·       Must be able to work weekends and holidays.

·       Must be able to adapt to an ever changing work environment.

·       Must have completed at least 2 years of college or be a recent college graduate in the field of science, psychology or other related animal field within the last 2 years.

·       Must have effective communication skills, both oral and written.

·       Public speaking skills are highly encouraged.

 

Job Description:

·         Performs daily animal diet preparations, routine cleaning of animal exhibits, kitchen and freezer areas.

·         Responsible for learning basic operant conditioning techniques.

·         Responsible for progressing through a 3 step training program. Progress will be done at the intern’s initiative.

·         Assists in the care and maintenance of the Aquarium’s seals, sea lions and sea otters.

·         Responsible for unloading periodic deliveries of frozen food and maintaining freezer.

·         Performs public presentations.

·         Accurately maintains all written computer records.

·         Performs water quality testing and data recording.

·         Performs other duties relating to the aquariums goals and mission statement as required.

Other Requirements: Responsible for own transportation and housing.
