OUTREACH NOTICE

Social Science Analyst,

GS-0101-11 (Riverside, CA)

The USDA Forest Service, Pacific Southwest Research Station (PSW) is seeking a candidate for Social Science Analyst, GS- 0101-11. This is a permanent, full time position. The purpose of this Outreach Notice is to inform prospective applicants of this upcoming opportunity. Brief description of duties associated with this position:

The position will be located in Riverside, CA. The incumbent will be a research analyst in the Urban Ecosystem and Social Dynamics (UESD) Program with responsibility for supporting research managers, research social scientists and economists in exploring the relationships and interdependencies between communities and ecosystems, culture and biodiversity, humans and natural resources, all of which evolve in response to societal and environmental change. An individual who has completed a graduate degree in social ecology, social or conservation psychology, or similar fields exploring paired social- ecological systems will be a good fit for this opportunity.

The incumbent provides professional expertise for social-ecological activities conducted in support of natural resource projects and programs to ensure that the relationships between people and public lands are understood by both the Agency and constituents/stakeholders and can be incorporated in the design and implementation of land management decisions. Results are expected to inform and improve urban natural resources and human community sustainability.

A background in social science research, ability to work independently on multiple projects, experience in qualitative and quantitative research and analytical methods, and experience in preparing and making presentations and in assisting with written reports are needed.

PSW is one of several research stations in the research and development (R&D) arm of the Forest Service, a component of the U.S. Department of Agriculture, and works at the forefront of science to improve the health and use of our Nation’s forests and grasslands. The work has a steady focus on informing policy and land-management decisions, whether it addresses invasive plants and insects, degraded river ecosystems, or sustainable ways to harvest forest products. Our researchers work independently and with a range of partners, including other agencies, academia, nonprofit groups, and industry. The information and technology produced through basic and applied science programs is available to the public for its benefit and use.

Riverside, CA

Riverside is a city in the Inland Empire and is located in southern California. It is known for many parks, museums, historical sites of interest, entertainment options, shopping, dining, and recreation settings. The city is in close proximity to three southern California National Forests. Within a few hour’s drive of the city you can arrive at beaches, mountains, or desert locations.
