ENVIRONMENTAL FIELD TECHNICIAN / FIELD LEAD POSITIONS: Burleson Consulting Inc. (based in Monterey, California) is seeking to hire one field technician and one field lead to support habitat restoration activities, invasive weed removal, hydrologic surveys, wildlife monitoring, and vegetation monitoring projects. Most work will be performed outdoors, often off-trail, steep terrain, and in all weather conditions. Upon hire, the successful candidate could begin full-time work (40 hours/week Monday-Friday) as early as August 2019.
RESPONSIBILITIES: Responsibilities will consist primarily of field work alongside Burleson biologists conducting habitat restoration activities, and to a lesser extent, biological surveying. This may include erosion control activities, native plant seed collection and propagation, seed broadcast, planting, irrigation system operation and maintenance, surveying of vegetation transects or quadrats, wildlife monitoring, hydrologic surveys, and invasive plant management (e.g. hand pulling, herbicide spraying, mixing/storing/handling herbicide in accordance with California Department of Pesticide Regulation and OSHA principles). Occasional out-of-town work will occur and would require travel. The field lead would lead and manage crews of one to four staff in conducting the above activities, as well as participate in those activities. All work will be conducted under the guidance of Burleson senior staff.
QUALIFICATIONS: Candidates interested in the position should have good plant identification skills and a general knowledge of biological resource surveys and habitat restoration. Technician-level candidates should have 0-1 years of relevant work experience, and a BS in biology, natural sciences, environmental science, or other relevant discipline. Field lead candidates should have 1-3 years of work experience that includes leading field crews to conduct restoration or surveying activities and a BS in a relevant field. Must be able to work independently and as part of a team. Good record keeping skills and attention to detail are mandatory. Proficiency in using Microsoft Word/Excel and GPS are mandatory, GIS is desirable. Experience with biological resource surveys and knowledge of local invasive species and eradication treatments are a plus. Possession of a Qualified Applicator Certificate/License from the California Department of Pesticide Regulation (CDPR), or ability to obtain, is desirable. Must have a valid driver’s license and clean driving record.
PHYSICAL FITNESS: Position requires long days in the field with prolonged walking and exposure to the elements. Much of the work is off trail on uneven terrain and through thick vegetation. Must be capable of carrying a 30-pound backpack and able to lift 50 pounds.
HAZARDS: Potential field hazards may include snakes, ticks, poison oak, or unexploded ordnance.
TRAINING: Training will include 24 hours towards OSHA. Training will also include Burleson-specific GPS protocols and post-processing of field-collected data. Potential for CDPR pesticide training.
SALARY: Technician level is $17-20/hour DOE. Field lead is $20-23/hour DOE. As a Burleson employee, some expenses such as use of a personal vehicle, will be reimbursed. This position is full-time beginning in August of 2019.
