Twin Rivers Charter School is an publicly chartered, alternative high school associated with Northwest Youth Corps.

The Outdoor Educator/Youth Development Specialist AmeriCorps internship is both highly demanding and highly rewarding serving high school students identified as at risk of academic failure and/or present behavioral challenges. Outdoor Educator/Youth Development Specialists spend most of their time in direct contact with students, either providing direct student instruction in small groups in a classroom setting, providing environmental education in the field, or facilitating conservation-based, service-learning projects.

Duties and Responsibilities- Essential Functions

• Assist in the coordination of the field and service work components of an outdoor high school including documentation of work performed.
• Aid student learning through small group instruction in the classroom
• Provide individualized attention for struggling high school students
• Lead youth in field education and on service-learning projects
• Facilitate experiential learning in the outdoors
• Act as a role model for youth, manage conflict-resolution
• Camp with students and teaching staff on up to four, 8-day trips in a wilderness setting
• Attend all AmeriCorps meetings and trainings
• Members are not allowed to engage in any prohibited activities per the Prohibited Activities form
• Knowledge and experience with issues of diversity, equity, and inclusion

Duties and Responsibilities- Secondary Functions

• Transport student teams in 12-passenger busses to field sites
• Participate in student conferences, interact with parents, and participate in behavior management planning
• Partner with other organizations and agencies, such as the School garden Project, Bergrenn Experimental Farm, US Forest Service, and Bureau of Land Management.
• Coordinate school projects, such as student council and student appreciation
• Help establish one new school partnership and/or research and write 1 new grant

Desired Qualifications:

• Experience teaching and/or leading youth, conservation, reforestation and/or outdoor recreation skills
• Desire for personal challenge and to help youth develop leadership and job skills
• Strong communication skills and a vested interest in community service
• Ability to participate in physical labor

Minimum Qualifications:

• Bachelor’s Degree Required (Outdoor Leadership and/or Youth Development experience preferred)
• Valid driver’s license and a history of responsible driving
• Applicant must be between the ages of 21 and 24 when applying
• Must provide current photo ID and proof of US Citizenship, US National or Permanent Resident status
• Willingness to undergo a criminal and sex offender background check

Schedule Requirements

• Full time (40-45 hours a week) with a minimum of 1700 hours during a ten month service term from August 19th, 2019 to June 17th, 2020. Exact dates are subject to slight change due to snow days and other unforeseen challenges in the calendar.
• Service hours are generally Mon-Fri, 8-4:30pm, with occasional night and weekend hours.

• $16,500 living allowance over the course of 10 months dispersed on a monthly basis.
