PRIMARY PURPOSE/GENERAL DESCRIPTION:
This primary responsibility of this entry-level position consists of organizing and promoting sustainability efforts at Scripps College.

DESCRIPTION OF DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:

On Campus Sustainability Program Coordinator:

  • Provide staff support to the chairs of the President’s Advisory Council on Sustainability, scheduling meeting, taking minutes, organizing and chairing subcommittees.
  • Coordinate annual harvest and sales of Scripps College Olive Oil, including community outreach, marketing, inventory, accounting, and production.
  • Conduct emissions inventory, feasibility studies and similar projects.
  • Manage public events such as the annual Sustainability Fair, Sustainability Tea, PowerDown Challenge, and other special events.
  • Promote collaboration with other Consortium sustainability and attending bimonthly meetings.
  • Assists Director of Facilities in pursuit of governmental and private grants for sustainability research and projects. Prepares grant proposals and coordinates with pre- and post-award sponsored research process.
  • Maintain sustainability website, updating frequently with events, news, and announcements.
  • Facilitate other sustainability programs initiated by student, faculty, and staff as deemed appropriate by Business Affairs.
  • Serve as an advisor to student groups under the supervision of the Director of Facilities.

Cross campus encouragement of Sustainability practices

  • Work collaboratively with the Facilities Department in promoting a sustainable and cost-effective approach to operational management.
  • Continue with data collection and analysis of campus water, electricity and gas use. Develop monthly reports. Provides expertise and support to the Director of Facilities, Maintenance Manager and CMMS/Energy Manager with energy utilization surveys of use and cost.
  • Build community partnerships in and around Claremont to promote Scripps College sustainability.
  • Under the supervision of the Director of Facilities, provides advisement to Business Affairs on energy and water use best practices within the higher education environment
  • Actively support the College’s Principles of Community and Principles of Diversity in the performance of job duties.
  • Support LEED building projects through publishing on-going LEED projects such as Schow Hall. Work in a collaborative team environment with all Dining Services and Facilities personnel.
  • Active support for the College’s Principles of Community and Principles of Diversity in the performance of job duties.

REQUIRED KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, and ABILITIES:
Individual must possess knowledge, skills and ability to be able to successfully perform the essential functions of the position, or be able to explain or demonstrate how the essential functions will be performed, with or without reasonable accommodation, using some other combination of skills and abilities.

  • Ability to compose high-quality written communications, correspondence, grant applications, reports, and other documents with an attention to detail.
  • Strong interpersonal and networking skills to work effectively with diverse and multiple constituencies.
  • Strong computer skills, including proficiency using Microsoft Word, Excel, Adobe Illustrator, as well a social media.
  • Ability to be proactive and work independently, as well as collaboratively.
  • Must be efficient in prioritizing work on simultaneous projects with an ability to meet deadlines.
  • Must have excellent knowledge of business writing skills, including spelling and grammar.
  • Mathematical ability to calculate bills and accounts.

QUALIFICATION STANDARDS:

EDUCATION & EXPERIENCE:

  • High School degree required. Preferred Bachelor’s Degree in related field.
  • Any combination of education, training or experience that provides that provides the knowledge, skills and abilities will be considered. 2+ years working experience with previous project coordination responsibilities. Previous experience in a community-based environment project a plus.

LICENSES / CERTIFICATES:

  • The Sustainability Coordinator must have the ability to safely drive as needed; the candidate’s DMV record must meet the College automobile liability insurance company’s requirements.

HOURS & CLASSIFICATION AND STATUS:

  • This is a regular full-time, benefits-eligible non-exempt position.
  • The regular hours of this position are Monday-Friday 8:00 am-5:00 pm. Hours may vary due to the needs of the College or department and may include some weekends.

REPORTS TO:
This position will primarily report to Director of Facilities. This position will also have a close working relationship with the Associate Director of Planning & Construction and Program Maintenance, Maintenance, Custodial and Grounds Managers as well as the General Manager of Dining Services.

SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITY:
None.

Finger dexterity required to manipulate objects with fingers rather than the whole hand(s), or arm(s), for example, using a keyboard. Communication skills using the spoken word. Ability to see within normal parameters. Ability to hear within normal parameters. Ability to bend and stoop, for example, to file. Ability to move about. Ability to lift and carry short distances up to 30 lbs., for example to lift or move office supplies, files, books and packages.

This position may require some work to be outdoors at times.
