Responsibilities
This is a Career/Career-Conditional Career-Seasonal position and subject to release and recall procedures. A permanent career-seasonal position includes all the benefits of permanent employment, but does not provide employment on a full year-round basis. As such, selectee will be in a non-pay/non-duty status for at least 2 weeks to 3 months per year based on project requirements or weather conditions. Selectees is guaranteed to work at least 9 months per year (position is guaranteed 20 payperiods) but not more than 50 weeks per year, with the work schedule to be determined upon appointment.
Biological Science Technician serves as one of the lead technicians for the North Coast and Cascades Network Inventory and Monitoring (NCCN I&M) Program, and is responsible for implementation of long-term monitoring of natural resources with the primary focus on climate, mountain lakes, and glaciers. The seven park units of NCCN include three large, predominantly natural areas, Olympic National Park, Mount Rainier National Park, and North Cascades National Park Complex, and four smaller, predominantly historic areas, Fort Vancouver National Historic Site, San Juan Island National Historical Park, Ebey’s Landing National Historical Reserve, and Lewis and Clark National Historical Park.
This position also assists with a variety of established natural resource monitoring projects (air quality, fisheries, and wilderness) at Mount Rainier National Park.
Work will be conducted independently and will require the appointee to be self-directed and motivated. Employee will be expected to work in a team atmosphere, be responsible for creating a safe personal environment, and communicate with staff in this and other parks, agencies and partners. The position organizationally is located within the Division of Natural and Cultural Resources at Mount Rainier National Park.Responsibilities include:
- Designs, coordinates, schedules and executes a wide variety of established natural resource monitoring projects using existing scientific protocols in accordance with park, NCCN Network and NPS guidelines.
- Evaluates project objectives and plans work process accordingly, independently choosing from among several possible courses of action at different stages of each project (e.g. selects site locations, sampling techniques, appropriate equipment, logistics, etc.).
- Develops and guides collection procedures using standardized data collection procedures and equipment; uses judgment to apply precedents and established techniques to new and complex situations. Ensures adequate quality control of data collected. Acquires, installs, operates inventories, calibrates and maintains sampling, monitoring and laboratory equipment and instruments, and analyzes and classifies samples.
- Coordinates work assignments and logistical arrangements of crews who make field observations of natural resource conditions, and evaluates crew member records of observed conditions and problems. Prepares safety, risk management, and planning documents for monitoring projects.
- Maintains relevant databases and conducts analysis of complex data using various computer programs to compile, store, retrieve, analyze and report data. Prepares draft project reports, and provides written comments on monitoring protocols, plans and reports prepared by others. May interpret data, trends, interrelationships among data and conditions, and documents significance of findings.
- Trains seasonal field technicians, intern and volunteer staff in resource monitoring projects and park operations.
