Job Title: Regional Plant Materials Coordinator

The Institute for Applied Ecology’s Habitat Restoration Program seeks a Plant Materials Coordinator with exceptional communication skills and a background in botany, crop science, restoration, or ecology to:

Lead a Regional Plant Materials Cooperative (1/2 time), and

Manage IAE Plant Materials Program (1/2 time).

Specific responsibilities include:

Regional Cooperative. The goal of the Regional Plant Materials Cooperative is to increase the availability of diverse native plant materials by coordinating the needs and interests of restoration partners.

Coordinate and receive guidance from public and private land managers, conservation organizations, and native seed producers to meet the diverse needs of the restoration community in the Willamette Valley.

Produce Regional Plant Materials Plan to increase capacity, infrastructure, and markets for plant production and restoration.

Host and facilitate 3 meetings per year for the Cooperative and help group reach consensus on important plant materials issues.

Work with web developer to create user group and blog for information sharing among members of the cooperative. Disseminate information through report writing, web publications, and presentations at meetings.

Acquire outside funding to support continuation of this position.

IAE Plant Materials Program.

Work with Habitat Restoration and Native Seed Network staff at IAE to meet program needs and provide links to the regional effort.

Provide high quality native plant materials for restoration. Lead activities for seed collection (supervise seed crew), seed purchases, production fields, and track these plant materials activities.

Inventory populations of Threatened and Endangered plant species to support recovery efforts.

Out-of-town travel (in the Willamette Valley) and field work (approximately 20% of the time) may be required as needed to complete these tasks. Overnight travel is not expected.

Minimum Qualifications:

Great people skills, outgoing, energetic, and flexible.

Bachelor’s degree in biology/botany, agriculture, or related field with 2 years experience.

Highly organized. Ability to manage multiple/complex objectives.

Strong written and oral communication skills, particularly in the area of meeting facilitation.

Experience, knowledge, and interest in native seed and plants, restoration, and local ecology.

Computer skills in Microsoft Word, Excel, Access, and PowerPoint.

Preferred Skills:

Master’s degree with 2 years experience.

Experience with Willamette Valley habitats and flora.

Knowledge of restoration organizations and seed transfer zone issues.

Experience and interest in working with seed producers, seed certification, and/or understanding of the nursery trade and large scale production.

Compensation and start date:

The pay rate for this position will be $18-19.40 per hour, based on education, skills and experience, and a 40 hour work week.

This is a full-time position and is eligible for IAE’s competitive benefits package, including health insurance.

Preference will be given to applicants who can start January 15th, 2012 or earlier.

Funding for this position is secured for one year of employment. However the position is intended to be long term pending additional funding.
