General Statement of Duties/SupervisionThe City seeks an energetic and skilled intern to assist the City’s GIS Division of the Public Works Engineering Department with multiple data collection and mapping projects.  The intern will learn about the functions and services of a local government and gain experience in the role of GIS in a public agency, particularly in a Public Works Department.

This position is estimated at 20 hours per week during the school year and/or the summer and is a part-time, intern position.

In addition to the responsibilities listed below, the intern may attend meetings and be assigned trainings to understand more about the GIS role.
Essential Job Duties

  • Collecting location and other information about assets in the field using a mapping-grade Trimble GPS unit.  Examples of assets the intern may be tasked with mapping include water meters, sewer clean outs, catch basins, and street signs.
  • Entry of attribute information to existing mapped features.
  • Researching old plans, building files, and other materials to find information to include in GIS.
  • Document work in progress.
  • Based on the selected candidate’s skills and interests, there are a wide variety of other projects the intern may be tasked with assisting on in order to gain experience and knowledge.

  • Excellent computer skills with the ability to learn quickly.
  • Ability to communicate and work as part of a team.
  • Flexibility and the ability to work independently.
  • Resourceful and self-directed.  Willingness to ask for assistance or clarification and to follow instructions.
  • Enthusiasm and interest in working for local government with a demonstrated commitment to service.
  • Some experience with Esri GIS software with the ability and desire to learn.
  • A valid driver’s license is required.
