FIELD TECHNICIANS – STREAM HABITAT MONITORING

Washington Department of Natural Resources is recruiting four Scientific Technician 2 positions to work on the Olympic Peninsula on the project Status and Trends Monitoring of Riparian and Aquatic Habitat in the Olympic Experimental State Forest. The work involves stream channel surveys (measuring channel depth, width, erosion, substrate), sampling in-stream wood, shade, and habitat units, downloading temperature data loggers and sampling the riparian forest (measuring tree diameters and identifying tree species).

Duration: 3-month positions starting on July 1st and ending on September 30th. The start and end dates may be adjusted up to 2 weeks based on the candidates’ availability.

Required qualifications: Ability to work in remote locations, navigate and hike steep, rugged terrain, and cope with harsh outdoor conditions such as heavy rain, high or low temperatures, and mosquitoes; ability to drive on forest roads; good work ethic and diligence in collecting and recording scientific data; ability to work in a team.

Desired qualifications: Experience in environmental sampling; knowledge of stream ecology and forest management; experience using GPS units and compass.

Salary and benefits: The monthly salary ranges from $2,781-$3,682 depending on candidate’s qualifications and experience. A 3% increase of the salary is expected in July.
Positions accrue 8 hours sick leave and 8 hours annual leave per month. Medical insurance is not provided, though coverage is provided for on-the-job injury.

Work schedule: The typical weekly schedule is four 10-hour workdays; usually Mon-Thu from 7.00 am to 5.30 pm. 95 percent of the work is in the field, working in a team of two.

The positions are stationed is Forks, WA, which means living in the area; housing is not provided by DNR, and finding housing in Forks may be difficult.

COVID-19: We are currently planning to conduct a typical field season, expecting that the stay-at-home order in Washington will be lifted by July. However, all field activities are contingent on COVID-19 regulations, and the start date of the positions may be delayed. The fieldwork will follow COVID-19 safety procedures required by WADNR.
