OneWorld Now! (OWN) is an educational nonprofit with over 15 years of experience providing language instruction, leadership development, and study abroad opportunities to primarily low-income youth of color in the Seattle area.

As part of our yearlong Global Language & Leadership Program, students can earn high school world language credit by studying Arabic, Mandarin Chinese, Korean, or Russian twice a week afterschool. They can also opt to participate in twice monthly Leadership workshops and apply to study abroad in South Korea, Morocco, or Russia.

About the Role

OneWorld Now! is seeking an energetic, organized, and dedicated individual to join our program staff as the Leadership Workshop Facilitator. As a part of our yearlong Global Language & Leadership Program, Leadership workshops use the experiential learning cycle to build social, emotional and intercultural skills through a social justice lens. The Leadership Facilitator will collaborate with another staff member to develop curriculum and deliver workshops to groups of 15-20 youth 2-3 times per week.

Note: This position is suitable for either an experienced facilitator interested in part-time work OR someone with other youth development experience who is interested in gaining experience with facilitation.

Main Responsibilities:
● WORKSHOP DESIGN & PLANNING

o Work collaboratively with staff and students to plan and prepare for Leadership workshops 2-3 times per week.
o Update and design workshop curriculum taking into consideration OneWorld Now!’s existing curriculum and other new resources that may be identified.

● WORKSHOP FACILITATION

o Lead and support workshop activities.
o Develop, support, and counsel student peer mentors.
o In an online setting this fall, we expect each session to include 15-20 youth. If health conditions allow for in-person sessions later in the year (e.g. if King County reaches Phase 4 of the Safe Start reopening plan), we expect the total number to be 35-50 youth.
o Maintain student attendance records at each leadership session.

● Other tasks as assigned.

Minimum Requirements:

● Experience facilitating workshops and trainings for high school students OR other relevant youth development experience.
● Experience designing workshops and/or curricula OR desire to collaborate with other staff to develop skills in this area.
● Experience working with diverse groups of youth, and ability to forge strong, safe, trusting relationships with youth.
● Passionate commitment to racial, social, and economic justice; familiarity with or interest in frameworks of social justice education and anti-racism work.
● Sensitivity to and respect for diverse cultures and different communication styles.
● Team player and excellent communicator.
● Ability to work collaboratively and independently.
● Ability to effectively manage time.

Preferred Characteristics:

● Excellent role model for youth; demonstrated integrity and commitment; dynamic, engaging personality.
● Experience with or interest in youth civic engagement, advocacy, or community organizing.
● Strong organizational skills.
● Knowledge of OneWorld Now! target languages or cultures (Arabic, Mandarin Chinese, Korean, or Russian) and/or languages commonly spoken in Seattle (e.g. Somali, Oromo, Vietnamese)

Commitment

Average 8 to 10 hours per week during program operations. Leadership workshops are currently planned to take place twice a week on weekday afternoons after 4:30pm. Regular planning meetings with student peer mentors should also be anticipated, usually taking place on a weekday evening (5-6:30 pm) or on weekends when students are available. In addition, the Facilitator will be expected to join a 90-minute weekly all-staff meeting. Leadership workshops will initially all take place online; if health conditions allow in-person meetings to take place later in the year, they will be in a central location in Seattle.

Location

All staff are currently working and delivering programs remotely until further notice. This position will begin as a 100% remote position but may move to all or partially in-person if health conditions allow. Preference will be given to facilitators located in the greater Seattle area who would be able to work in-person on some programs if health conditions allow.

Hours and pay rate

Non-exempt, part-time hourly position. Suggested hourly rate is $30 – $35 DOE. Must be authorized to work in the United States; OneWorld Now! does not sponsor visa applications or petitions.
