SUBJECT:  SUMMER JOBS FOR STUDENTS IN AGRICULTURE AND BIOLOGY

Willamette Agricultural Consulting offers pest management consulting services to Willamette Valley farms and nurseries.  We provide field monitoring services and recommendations for integrated pest management, but do not sell or apply pesticides.  Four or five students are hired to assist with field sampling for our programs.  One position begins in March and three or four summer positions begin in mid-June.  There is also a possibility of part time work on Saturdays in April and May.

Responsibilities of our insect samplers include identification of insects and plant diseases, sampling to estimate densities of pests and natural enemies, observation of plant growth and pest damage, and preparation of sampling reports.  The success of our consulting program depends upon quality field sampling by our staff.  It is essential that samplers are observant and conscientious and that they perform their work with care and integrity.  We provide on-the-job training in pest identification and sampling techniques and do not have course work prerequisites for these positions.  However, it is preferred that our insect samplers have completed a course in entomology or a biology course that covers insects.

These summer positions will provide an excellent work-learning experience for students.  You will be able to observe crop growth and production on a daily basis and will assist in the application of agricultural research to commercial farming.  Internship credit for these positions is available through several OSU departments in Agriculture and Science.  Internship credit may also be available from other universities.  Interested students may write to the address above for further information; phone us at (503) 378-7003; or contact us at the email address below.
