Fish & Wildlife Biologist 2 *00208W

Salary: $3,117.00 – $4,088.00 Monthly

This recruitment is to fill two (2) fulltime project positions within the Wildlife Program’s Wolf Conservation and Management Plan Project. This project is currently funded through June 30, 2013, with a possible extension of funding. The duty stations are located in Eastern Washington and report to the Carnivore Section Manager within the Wildlife Program’s Game Division.  One position serves as a wolf biologist for the Eastern Washington wolf recovery region.  The second position serves as a wolf biologist for the North Cascades wolf recovery region.

 

The duty station for these positions is negotiable with the successful candidates.  The positions will be stationed in two separate locations from the following:  Spokane (Spokane County), Wenatchee (Chelan County), and Colville (Stevens County).

 

 
DUTIES:
The duties and responsibilities of these positions are to:

  • ·         Confirm pack activity in areas identified following reports from local biologists and the public.
  • ·         Capture wolves using contemporary trapping methods and anesthetize.
  • ·         Place satellite/radio collars on the animals.
  • ·         Release the animals and track them via satellite downloads, and aerial and ground surveys.
  • ·         Maintain telemetry location database; plot locations on maps to determine wolf location, rendezvous sites, productivity, and home range.
  • ·         Prepare and provide information to wolf website managers; produce bi-weekly maps of wolf locations and other relevant information for posting on the agency website; assist in the development of an interactive reporting system on the wolf website.
  • ·         Collaborate with WDFW District wolf response team in identifying, responding to, and mitigating wolf conflict reports.
  • ·         Complete bi-annual report on wolf activities in Washington.

 

 

 

Working Conditions

The successful candidate must be willing and able to:

  • ·         Work hours outside of the regular business hours of 8:00 am – 5:00 pm, Monday through Friday, including evenings and weekends.
  • ·         Perform work in the field up to 80% of the time.
  • ·         Travel up to 40% of the time including occasional overnight stays.
  • ·         Walk, bend, and stoop while carrying up to 40 pounds.
  • ·         Transport equipment and gear.
  • ·         Work in inclement weather over difficult terrain including slippery rocks, steep banks, and sticky mud.
  • ·         Conduct data analysis and make inferences from data.
  • ·         Work at remote field sites
  • ·         Operate motor vehicles in field situations.
  • ·         Conduct field surveys to collect data.

 

 

This position is covered by a collective bargaining agreement between the State of Washington, Department of Fish & Wildlife and the Washington Association of Fish and Wildlife Professionals (WAFWP), which contains a “union security” provision. This means that, as a condition of employment, you must either join the union and pay union dues, or pay the union a representation or other fee within 30 days of the date you are put into pay status.

 

 
QUALIFICATIONS:
Required

A Bachelor’s degree in wildlife, biology, zoology, environmental science, or related natural sciences discipline; AND two years of professional level experience in wolf or large carnivore trapping, immobilization, and telemetry.

 

A Master’s degree or Ph.D. may substitute for one year of the required experience. 

 

 

Desirable Qualifications

Two years of professional level experience as an entry level biologist.

 

Experience working in remote, wild locations under a wide variety of weather conditions.

 

Competencies

Well qualified applicants will possess demonstrated abilities in the following areas:

  • ·         Provide leadership for the monitoring and research programs associated with the wolf recovery efforts in Washington.
  • ·         Conduct research on survival, multi-scale habitat selection, home range estimation, and movements of re-colonizing wolves.
  • ·         Effectively communicate with agency representatives, colleagues, and the public to gain assistance and cooperation with the wolf recovery program and WDFW species recovery programs.
  • ·         Collaborate with other researchers to achieve monitoring and research objectives.
  • ·         Conduct effective oral presentations at scientific conferences, agency meetings, and public meetings.
  • ·         Write, edit and publish professional documents, reports, and funding proposals.
  • ·         Safely, successfully and consistently trap wolves.
  • ·         Coordinate and collaborate with professional biologists and technicians, landowners, stockowners, and the general public.
  • ·         Demonstrate conflict resolution skills with landowners and other constituents and stakeholders.
  • ·         Expertise using GIS software and conducting habitat selection analysis.
