The Department of Fish and Wildlife is recruiting to fill two (2) full time non-permanent Fish and Wildlife 

Biologist 1 positions in the Wildlife Program, Research Division.  The duty station for these positions is Ephrata, WA with work in the field conducting field surveys.  The duration of these positions is anticipated to be from March 1, 2012 through May 31, 2012. 

DUTIES: 

These positions will participate in a biological study of Washington ground squirrels. 

 Primary duties include, but are not limited to: 

 

·         Conducting squirrel detection surveys independently at remote locations, recording and entering data 

in computer databases, planning and scheduling daily activities with other biologists, interacting with 

landowners and agency personnel for access permission, and preparing a summary report. 

 

·         Maintaining a vehicle, project trailer, and field equipment (GPS receiver, weather meters). 

·         Working with other professional biologists to refine survey protocols, identify survey sites, test or demonstrate field techniques, and assist with other field investigations. 

WORKING CONDITIONS 

The successful candidate must be willing and able to: 

·         Work in all weather conditions including extreme heat or rain and sometimes over difficult terrain 

and surfaces up to 100% of the time. 

·         Work hours outside of the regular 8:00 am – 5:00 pm, Monday – Friday work hours including 

evenings and weekends. 

·         Travel up to 2 hours from duty station daily. 

·         Safely operate motor vehicles and ATV’s. 

·         Have a valid driver license. 

·         Work alone in remote locations. 

 

This position is covered by a collective bargaining agreement between the State of Washington, Department 

of Fish & Wildlife and the Washington Association of Fish and Wildlife Professionals (WAFWP), which contains 

a “union security” provision. This means that, as a condition of employment, you must either join the union 

and pay union dues, or pay the union a representation or other fee within 30 days of the date you are put 

into pay status. 

 

QUALIFICATIONS: 

Required Qualification 

Bachelor’s degree in natural resources, zoology, or wildlife. 

 

Preferred Qualifications 

At least 3 months’ experience conducting transect call surveys for ground squirrels. 

 

The best qualified applicants will demonstrate competencies in the following areas: 

 

·         Familiarity with occupancy and detection modeling methods. 

·         Meticulous data collection and recording. 

·         Ability to orient using a GPS receiver and follow survey transects using GPS.
