The Siuslaw National Forest will soon be advertising two seasonal, full-time BiologicalTechnician, 0404 and Grades 03 and 05. The duty station is the Supervisor’s Office, Corvallis, Oregon. The purpose of this Outreach Notice is to inform the potential applicant pool of this position.

ABOUT THE POSITION:
The incumbent will conduct lichen surveys and collect lichen samples to assess air quality in 11 Wilderness Areas of Washington and Oregon. Specific duties include permanent plot re-location (with aerial photo, map, compass, and GPS), performing FIA-FHM style lichen community surveys, making forest measurements (tree coring, tree diameter, etc), and vascular plant identification.
Competitive applicants will have basic field botany skills for Oregon and Washington forests including familiarity with shrub and tree species and indicator non-woody plants, be comfortable working and living outdoors, be proficient in cross-country navigation by compass, map and aerial photos, and will have completed basiccoursework or provide evidence of field experience in identifying epiphyticmacrolichens of the Pacific Northwest.
Work will be in remote areas with long hours, and irregular field schedules from 3- 10 days, primitive camping for the duration. Accessing many of this year’s field sites will require backpacking (up to 8 days), and cross-country hiking over rugged terrain. Common adverse field conditions include exposure to heat, cold and rain; biting & stinging insects; steep slopes and dense vegetation.
