Status: Non-Exempt/Hourly ? This is a temporary position.
Hours of Work: There are two Camp Counselor positions and counselors 
must be available all the following dates/times:
Pre Camp Season: Week of June, 18-22 Monday ? Friday 8am-5pm for staff 
training. Week of June 25?29 Hours/Dates will vary for pre season 
production.
Camp Season Runs. July 2 – August 24, M-F, shift times vary. 40 hours 
a week. Week of July 2 you will not work Wednesday 4th of July and be 
paid 32 hours.
Week of camps, Counselors will be assigned one of two shift times:. 
7:30am-4:30pm or 9am-6pm.
Post Camp Season: August, 27 ?31. Hours/Dates will vary for debrief, 
evaluation and cleaning.

About the Seattle Aquarium: The Seattle Aquarium is owned by the City 
of Seattle and under nonprofit management. The Aquarium currently 
serves over 825,000 visitors and 50,000 school children and their 
teachers annually. Guided by the mission of Inspiring Conservation of 
our Marine Environment, the Seattle Aquarium has a realistic plan for 
phased growth based on record-setting attendance, membership and 
fundraising growth, an energized Board of Directors and professional 
management. The current annual budget is $12 million.
Position Overview: Seattle Aquarium Marine Summer Camp Counselors are 
role models who will be working with a professional team of camp 
staff, high school volunteers, campers and their families. Campers? 
age range 5 to 15 years old and are separated by varying age groups. 
You will work with all ages of campers while leading your group of up 
to 10 campers in all aspects of camp programming.
Primary job functions:
Ensure the safety of all campers.
Lead your own group of 8-10 campers each week. Ages vary from 5-15 
years old

All camp staff oversees all campers each week. 24-30 campers per week.
Lead the scheduled activities on time for your group while positively 
encouraging all campers to participate, observe, discover and 
appreciate their marine environment while being respectful of their 
surroundings on and off site.
Activities include, but are not limited to counselors leading; marine 
science lessons, games, exhibit and behind-the-scenes tours and 
fieldtrips.
Assist with all aspects of maintenance, preparation set up and clean 
up of all program related activities on and offsite.
Act as the communication link between the Lead Camp Instructor and 
high school volunteer counselors to help guide them in fulfilling 
leadership roles.
Establish and build positive relationships with all camp staff, 
volunteers, interns, campers and their families & our camp partner 
organizations.
Promote appropriate behavior among all camp participants and serve as 
a role model.
Other camp related projects as assigned.

Special Knowledge, Skills, Training:
Minimum of 2 years experience working with children and/or teens.
Minimum of 2 years experience working in an aquarium, zoo, 
environmental education center or similar institution required. 
Previous experience working in a camp setting preferred.
Educational background in Education, Child Development, Recreation, 
Environmental Science, or related field.
Experience working with diverse racial and socio-economic audiences.
Excellent oral and written communication skills.
Excellent leadership abilities.
Strong organizational skills.
Demonstrated reliability, responsibility and enthusiasm.
Basic knowledge of group activities, games, team building initiatives 
or other environmental education related programming.
Ability to work effectively both independently and as a team player.
Be flexible in a rapidly changing work environment.
Knowledge of marine science and conservation.
First Aid/CPR Certification required.
Basic knowledge of water quality testing kits, beach transect tools, 
plankton tow, microscopes, comfortable using microphones, TV/DVD 
players.
Familiarity with MS Office Programs; Word, Excel, Outlook.

Education:
Required: Completed High School and Must be 18 years of age or older.
Desired: College courses in Education, Child Development, Recreation, 
Environmental Science and Biology.

Working Conditions:
Flexible schedule and be able to commit to the hours and dates of work 
above.
High energy needed to walk several miles carrying gear and supplies at 
field sites on uneven terrain.
Must be able to spend long periods of times outdoors during all 
weather conditions (extreme heat or rain)
Must be able to sit, stand walk, run for varied and extended periods 
of time while interacting with children and teens.
Heavy to moderate vocal demands to project talks and announcements to 
direct a large audience in loud areas during heavy foot and vehicle 
traffic.
Ability to lift at least 30lbs

Salary and Benefits: $12.50
