Requirements: Natural Science program or closely related field of study. Tribal staff willing to work with student and Evergreen Staff regarding educational credits. Valid Driver’s License and reliable transportation. Must be willing and able to work outside in a variety of weather conditions, lift and carry up to 25 lbs. walk on trails, river banks and un-even potentially slippery surfaces.
Summer Quarter 2-4 days per week, fixed day schedule, 6-8 hours/day
Hands on learning opportunity working with Adult Salmon on the Nisqually River ~ 10 miles north of OlympiaWA, Potential areas of study are as follows:
- Asst. construction and operation of an fish weir and traps
- Data collection and fish sampling of Tribal harvest
- Sampling juvenile fish in Estuary and near shore habitat’s with south Puget Sound
Fall Quarter 2-4 days per week, fixed day schedule,6-8 hours/day
Hands on learning opportunity working with Returning adult Chinook salmon at one of the Nisqually Tribes fish hatcheries located ~ 10 miles north of OlympiaWA. Potential areas of study are as follows:
- Harvesting of fish for eggs, data collection
- Fertilization and incubation procedures
- Hatchery operational experience
