The Nisqually Land Trust acquires and manages critical lands to permanently protect water resources, wildlife, natural areas, and scenic vistas in the Nisqually River watershed. The land trust is offering two summer land steward internships. Students will monitor sites; install signs, fences, and gates; do habitat maintenance activities; invasive species control; and select an independent project related to the Land Trust’s stewardship activities. Squaxin Island Tribal Canoe Journey (Olympia Host Committee) seeks spring quarter interns to help plan for one of the largest events ever held in Olympia.  Interns will help develop a coordinated approach to preparing non-Native TESC students to host in respectful and appropriate roles as allies; lay out paths/procedures for volunteers to follow; make crafts (especially sewing) as part of the traditional protocol for hosting; or be a part of the Green Team aiming to make the entire event sustainable. The Canoe Journey itself takes place July 29-August 5. The Thurston Conservation District works to preserve precious area farmland by promoting voluntary stewardship among private landowners in Thurston County. The district offers a variety of internship opportunities year-round. Internship contracts are tailored to provide the student with more in-depth experience in a range of focus areas and the opportunity to expand knowledge and skills in areas not provided through traditional education. GI Voice; Coffee Strong: GI Voice is a non-profit serving members of the military, veterans, and their families.  GI Voice runs COFFEE STRONG, a GI Coffeehouse/outreach center right outside the gates of Joint Base Lewis-McChord that provides access to resources, information, GI rights counseling, a cup of coffee and conversation. United Communities AIDS Network aims to provide the highest quality of life to all those infected by HIV/AIDS, to prevent the spread of HIV, and to increase awareness about the disease. The organization provides support services to all people living with HIV/AIDS. Washington State Coalition Against Domestic Violence (WSCADV) aims to end domestic violence through advocacy and action for social change. The Crossing Borders Program coordinates state-wide culturally competent programming to address domestic and sexual violence where it intersects with poverty, racism, language and access barriers, systems response, labor exploitation and human trafficking. Interns may work with WSCADV’s team on storytelling for social change, movement building, fund development, public policy, maintaining and growing networks, cyberactivismo (cyber activism with Latin@ groups), research, concept translations and accessibility (taking academic knowledge and creating tools that can be used by most.) Pierce County’s Emergency Food Network (EFN) is in need of volunteer or intern support on their farm in the Puyallup Valley or at their distribution warehouse in Lakewood. They also have needs in administration, special events, community outreach, food drives, and food banking.

Beach Naturalist Program: The Beach Naturalist Program is a part of the South Sound Estuary Association. They Provide hands on activities to learn about our local beaches and how to protect them. Camp Quixote / Quixote Village is a tent city in Olympia that provides safe haven for people experiencing homelessness. The camp is a self-governed community that operates with the aid of a broad-based support committee known as the Panza group.  Check them out at http://quixotevillage.com/. Presently they need volunteers for hosting, help with food donations, creating a new pamphlet about the camp and future village, a poster to be used at fairs, fundraising support, food preparation, support for Quixote Village architects, or just time spent hanging out and watching a movie with residents while filling host desk shifts. Rachel Corrie Foundation for Peace and Justice: RCF continues the work that Rachel Corrie began. They conduct and support programs that foster connections between people and builds understanding, respect, and appreciation for differences, and they connect local and global communities. YouthBuild is a youth and community development program that addresses core issues facing low-income communities: housing, education, employment, and leadership development. 16-21 year old participants fulfill their GED or high school diploma while building with Habitat for Humanity, United Way, and Camp Quixote. Evergreen interns may conduct interviews with the youth about their experiences in the program, assist those with court-ordered community service to find fulfilling places/ways to complete their hours, or work with the staff to plan another suitable project. The Counter Point Journal aims to provide a space for those who are participating in and are most affected by events to speak for themselves.Student interns can focus their work in photosgraphy, writing, learning how to do layout, and (what the journal most needs) investigative reporting. People who are able to do issue-based research (ie: on the student conduct code or state budget) will receive ample support to turn their raw findings into written pieces. Gateways for Incarcerated Youth offers incarcerated young people the opportunity to study with professors and students from The Evergreen State College. Their Academic Mentoring Program offers one-on-one peer mentoring and tutoring. It is youth-driven and goal oriented, pairing outside volunteers (or TESC interns) with young men at Green Hill. Together they develop a syllabus/work plan to meet once a week for 1-2 hours. The program is a way for young men to get additional support in the completion of their high school diploma, GED, post-incarceration plans, and/or college class work. Books to Prisoners: BTP volunteers respond to both specific and generic book requests from prisoners. The underlying mission is to offset de-humanizing effects of incarceration by sending reading materials based on individual requests. BTP is looking for student Volunteer/Interns to work with a variety of projects to help increase the capacity of BTP to work in solidarity with incarcerated people. CIELO: CIELO Project/Radio Ranch was founded in 1996 by a dedicated group of Latina women with a specific focus on services to the Hispanic community in the four county (Mason, Lewis, Thurston and Grays Harbor) area. Programs provided by CIELO include English as a Second Language (ESL) and Spanish Literacy/GED at no cost. This Spring CIELO is beginning satellite ELL class at the Yelm Community Center on Tuesday and Wednesday evenings, 6-8:30 pm. They are looking for volunteers to participate. Flaming Eggplant: This is an on campus opportunity for students to get involved with food justice issues that directly impact the Evergreen Community. The Flaming Eggplant is run non-hierarchically and is a small business that serves food on campus. They are autonomous from the main food service provider and are student-run. Boys and Girls Clubs of Lacey or Rochester is dedicated to inspiring and enabling the young people of Thurston County to realize their full potential as productive, responsible citizens, by providing neighborhood based clubs that are positive places for kids. Volunteers will assist members with homework, reading, or other educational activities and need to have an interest in working with youth, basic knowledge of English and math, to be mature, dependable and positive, and must have strong communication skills. Many of the kids are in dire need of homework help to bring up their grades in school. They are super cool and fun to work with! There is no time requirement, but consistency and accountability are critical and they appreciate a minimum commitment of one hour per week during the school year around 4pm. Days vary.

Pacific Education Institute is a nonprofit that is committed to getting environmental education into the K-12 schools, has need for two interns to five to ten hours a week on a cultural responsiveness project.

This project is a review of the cultural responsiveness of PEI’s programs. This project will include working with PEI staff to learn and implement the Barr Foundation’s  Cultural Competency  Metrics, assist with a report for the PEI Board of Directors, and with a long term plan for PEI’s continued cultural responsiveness efforts in Washington State. The project will be best undertaken by someone with a prior understanding of cultural competency, environmental justice and/or diversity training. Madison Elementary* is located on the east side of Olympia and is an outstanding elementary school that serves many low-income or homeless youth. It has a large garden that is used for educational purposes, food, and supplies for the school’s Cooking Cart’s lessons. Their volunteer opportunities at present are finding interns to undertake a large-scale revamp on their garden, and they need a few volunteers for an afterschool art club and an afterschool chess club, among others. GRuB (Garden Raised Bounty) inspires positive personal and community change by bringing people together around food and agriculture. They partner with youth and people with low-incomes to create empowering individual & community food solutions and offer tools & trainings to help build a just & sustainable food system. Tacoma Community House: Provides services to refugees, immigrants, and English speaking adults and youth. From hosting Tacoma’s first baby clinic, to holding the first organized kindergarten class, to hiring the first African American teacher, TCH has achieved many “firsts” in our community. The Northwest EcoBuilding Guild supports builders in the community to utilize sustainable materials, equipment, and process in their work. Fertile Ground Community Center / Fertile Guild Commons is a project focused on a city block in downtown Olympia with a large garden, chickens, compost bins, a Community Supported Agriculture drop-off shed and many other not-so-visible activities that support urban sustainability. Up until recently, this project has been cobbled together (by Fertile Ground Guesthouse and the NW EcoBuilding Guild) with a steady stream of volunteers and interns. They’ve been hosting community building projects for over 10 years. The hope of the Commons is to put the land into a trust so that it will always be green space.
