Regional Education and Training Center at the Satsop Development Park (located at the abandoned nuclear power plant near Elma) is hosting their annual event called Try-A-Tradeand is looking for 7 volunteers to help out at this event. Try-A-Trade is a career fair that provides exciting educational opportunities in the skilled trades, particularly construction, energy and manufacturing for junior and senior high school students. Our goal is to bring together a wide range of hands-on industry activities and exhibits that will fuel students’ interests in pursuing and advancing through the many career paths available to them. Some of the events the students will be participating in are heavy equipment operations, such as backhoe, cats, boom trucks, and overhead cranes at Brown Minneapolis Tank (located inside the old reactor building), hands-on wire and meter trucks from Tacoma Power, power and crane simulators, industrial systems controls, masonry, carpentry, firefighting, etc.
There will be over 600 students attending from 20 high schools in western Washington so we need 7 volunteers from 7:30 AM to 2:00 PM on Thursday, May 3rd to help make sure the event runs smoothly. Duties are simple and will include safety debriefing on arriving busses, helping to maintain order during lunch, helping with registration upon arrival, and making sure that equipment and exhibit areas are staffed in case any help is needed with students or demonstrators. You can also check out the exhibits and demonstrations if interested and speak with the participating organizations and companies. This is a good opportunity for anyone who is interested in energy, education, the skilled trades or just coming out to volunteer and be part of the activities. Also, lunch will be provided for all volunteers as well as a chance to climb one of the 480 ft. cooling towers after the event!
