POSITION: ‘Forest and Fish’ Resource Assistant
Employer and Position
The SRSC Forest and Fish Program supports the protection of fish habitat and other tribally valued resources throughout the Skagit basin from logging and related forestry activities. The Forest and Fish Assistant is a permanent position that will provide a variety of technical and management tasks to support program goals as described below.
Duties and Responsibilities
- Assist with the field and office review of forestry activities to assess potential impacts to fish habitat, water resources and other treaty-protected resources.
- Provide clear and focused verbal and written feedback to colleagues, agency and landowner staff.
- Perform field data collection in a rugged forest environment.
- Perform office tasks involving data entry and management, preparation of summaries and reports and related tasks.
- Contribute, as assigned, to other projects or tasks required by SRSC or member tribes.
Qualifications
Education: A B.S. degree in hydrology, forestry, geology, fish biology, environmental science or a related natural resource field is required. Interdisciplinary training that includes coursework in two or more of these topics is strongly preferred.
Experience: A minimum of two years of natural-resources-related work experience is required. Experience ideally includes a combination of field work, data entry or analysis and writing. Working knowledge of forest harvest and road practices, watershed management and erosion control, salmonids and their freshwater habitat are all desirable. Experience working successfully in an environmental regulatory, inter-agency, or tribal context is also beneficial.
Skills and Abilities: Demonstrated abilities to work productively and collaboratively in a variety of field and office settings is crucial. Therefore, candidates must have strong writing, verbal and interpersonal skills.
Must have familiarity with computer software including word-processing, spreadsheets, database and presentation programs. Working knowledge of GIS and GPS and their application is
highly desirable. Knowledge of the Forest and Fish Agreement and Washington Forest Practices Rules will be helpful.
Must be able to work safely and efficiently in rugged forest and stream environments under challenging weather conditions. The position requires a valid driver’s license and ability to safely navigate forest roads. Position requires occasional overnight travel.
Must be sensitive to Native American culture, customs and traditions.

Working Location: SRSC field office in Burlington, Washington
Position Reports to: Forest and Fish Program Director
Salary: $35 – 50,000 annually + benefits, DOQ. This position is intended to be permanent but is supported by year-to-year state and federal disbursements that are not guaranteed.
