This is to fill a full-time permanent Scientific Technician 2 position in the Fish Program, Fish Management Division. The duty station will be 14512 Whitman Ave, Shoreline, WA from July 1, 2012 thru April 15, 2013, and from April 16, 2013 thru June 30, 2013 at WDFW Region 4 Headquarters located at 16018 Mill Creek Blvd, Mill Creek, WA.
This position conducts test fishing in mark fisheries to obtain stock composition (DNA), age structure, length information
(legal & sublegal proportions), and hatchery/wild fractions(mark-status proportions). Collects and summarizes recreational
salmon, marine fish and shellfish data to meet sampling goals. Tribal and WDFW biologist use these data to determine
resource status and manage fish and shellfish resources.

Duties:
Fishes for salmon in WDFW boat using a variety of methods to mimic thefishing fleet. Samples catch to obtain stock composition (DNA), age structure(scales), length information (legal & sublegal proportions)
and hatchery/wild fractions (mark-status proportions).  Records location, hours fished, and methods (test fishing form) or the numbers of boats/anglers and their location (boat survey form). Assess an overall health rating to each fish to each fish prior to release to aid in our attempts to look at survival rate of each release fish.
Summarizes the amount of time spent on fishing each method. Operates outboard motor boat including traikering and
launching. Performs minor routine maintenance on the boat, motor and trailer.

Working Conditions
The hours of work are 24/7 (non-schedule) 40 hours per week; weekend and evening work
required. 8-10 hours per day between 5 a.m. and 11 p.m. Trawl surveys – field activities are
generally schyeduled around weather and tide windows and often require working in excess of 40
hours/week with comp time accrual and/or payout. During the trawl surveys 3-4 nights each week
are spent aboard the survey vessel. The work environment is inside/outside, inclement weather,
rough water, noise, odors, repetitive movements of hands, finger manipulations, long periods of
sitting, squatting, walking, boating – working abord vessels up to 60 feet in length and piloting vessels
up to 22″ in length, climbing in and out of boats, sampling salmon in a boat, carrying, kneeling, lifting
(up to 40 lbs. unassisted) containers of fish, SCUBA equipment, and other survey equiment, working
and standing in confined space, fish blood and slime, slippery surfaces, raingear, equipment holster,
personal floatation devises (PFD), agency identifying clothing, bees ( yellow jackets), and use of
knives). Interacts with the general public during data collection and provides basic information
regarding fish resources as well as agency programs and activities. Provides sport fishing regulatory
information to the public. Includes some contact with those who may be angry, distraught, or
frustrated. Liaison to regional supervisor on fishery violations observed in the field. A valid
Washington State Driver’s License.
