Position Title: Biological Science Technician (Plants) at the GS-06/07.
Tour of Duty: Permanent.
Duty Station: Diamond Lake District.
Description of Duties: This position oversees the noxious weed and native species revegetation program on the Diamond Lake and North Umpqua Ranger Districts. Primary duties include implementing an integrated weed management program that includes manual, mechanical and chemical management of invasive species. The position also is responsible for revegetation and restoration projects across the two ranger districts and oversees a crew of seasonal employees. Other duties include plant identification, habitat assessment, database management, lifting and carrying and other miscellaneous duties. This position works closely with both other district programs and external partners including nurseries, contractors, volunteers and other state and federal agencies.
Duty Location: Work will be performed on the Diamond Lake and North Umpqua Ranger Districts, which comprise the watershed of the middle and upper North Umpqua River. Employees will be based at Diamond Lake Ranger Station in the southern Oregon Cascades, 60 miles east of Roseburg, Oregon. National Forest land surrounds the ranger station, offering outdoor activities such as hiking, mountain biking, camping, boating, fishing, climbing, and hunting. Crater Lake National Park, Diamond Lake, and several wilderness areas are all within 30 miles. Government Housing is available at the Toketee Ranger Station.
Forest Information: The Umpqua National Forest covers nearly one million acres along the western slopes of the Cascade Mountains in Southwest Oregon. The Forest encompasses a diverse area of sparkling rivers and lakes, deep canyons, and rugged mountains up to 9200 feet in elevation. The Umpqua produces a wealth of water resources, timber, wildlife, fish habitat, minerals, and outdoor recreation opportunities. Included within the Forest are the North Umpqua Wild and Scenic River, a portion of the Rogue-Umpqua Scenic Byway, three wildernesses and the Oregon Cascades Recreation Area. Also within the Umpqua is the Diamond Lake Recreation Composite, one of the largest developed recreational facilities within the Forest Service.
The Umpqua National Forest employs approximately 275 permanent and 150 temporary employees. The Forest has four ranger districts; located at Cottage Grove, Glide, Toketee, and Tiller; and the Dorena Genetic Resource Center, which supports genetic resource and vegetation management programs for Oregon and Washington. The Forest also provides administrative and engineering assistance to the Wolf Creek Civilian Conservation Corps Center located near Glide.
