Utah Forest Program Wildlife Associate Job Announcement Posted on December 23, 2010 by gctrust Utah Forest Program Wildlife Associate Job Announcement Full-time April-December 2011 with potential for permanent employment SUMMARY OF RESPONSIBILITIES Assist with Restoration of Beaver on Three National Forests in Utah The Utah Forests Program Wildlife Associate will work with the Utah Forest Program Manager and external partners to help restore beaver throughout the three Colorado Plateau national forests in Utah (Dixie, Fishlake, and Manti-La Sal). Responsibilities for this position include field assessment of historic and active beaver habitat on the three Forests as well as coordination of collaborative research, advocacy, planning, and beaver restoration efforts across the three Forests. The position requires field skills, creative thinking, problem solving, communication skills with state and federal agencies, landowners, other waters users and the general public; and the ability to work independently.
DUTIES
The Wildlife Associate will assist with the restoration of functional populations of beaver throughout Dixie, Fishlake, and Manti-La Sal NFs, which span almost 4 million acres across southern and central Utah. S/he will assess beaver populations and habitat conditions in active beaver sites and historic beaver sites that have been prioritized for potential reintroduction of beaver in the Utah Beaver Management Plan[1]. S/he will work with Trust volunteers and Utah Division of Wildlife staff to accomplish portions of the field work, including livetrapping and translocation of beaver as requested by the UDWR; and will produce timely and professional assessment reports. S/he will maintain active communications with the Forest Service, private landowners and other users of water systems slated for potential reintroduction of beaver.
S/he will work with the Utah Forest Program Manager to represent the Grand Canyon Trust with the public and our partners on beaver- and other wildlife-related projects.
MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS:
* Communication ability: Excellent writing and oral communication skills.
* Beaver Project management: Excellent organizational and project management skills.
* Research and analytical ability: Ability to undertake independent scientific field research and communicate graphically and technically the significance of the research results within the larger contexts of riparian restoration and conservation-based habitat management on the three Forests.
* Interpersonal skills: Ability to work constructively with all GCT staff, particularly all staff working within the Utah programs; and with a wide diversity of colleagues, volunteers, the general (sometimes
skeptical) public, and public officials.
* Time management skills: Ability to keep a number of activities moving forward simultaneously.
* Foundational knowledge: Restoration science, wildlife biology.
Knowledge of strategic issues related to the nexus between restoration science, management, policy, and politics is highly desirable.
* Graduate degree in field biology or related wildlife field required; and five years experience or equivalent working in a conservation and/or restoration-related field preferred.
Salary
