About the Organization

The Vancouver Watersheds Alliance is a non-profit organization founded in 2008. The VWA is a 501 (c) (3) located within the geographic limits of Vancouver, Washington.  The VWA’s mission is “to bring together and engage the community rejuvenate Vancouver’s natural spaces and urban places”. Funding for VWA programs is provided by the City of Vancouver’s Solid Waste Department, City of Vancouver Surface Water Management, grants, in-kind services, donations and membership dues. The budget for the Vancouver Watersheds Alliance is approximately $200,000.

Current programs include Neighborhood Association grant program, Sustainability film series, tree and shrub planting events along local waterways, City cleanup events and invasive plant removal. VWA outreach events connected with over 15,000 people in 2011 alone.

 

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Visionary and strategic thinking.
  • Results oriented and personally accountable for expectations and timelines.
  • Working with the board to refine the organizations long-term strategy in alignment with its mission.
  • Consistent performance in meeting the operating goals and objectives established by the Board of Directors.
  • Review and evaluate current programs. Work with board to envision new programs. Successful implementation of all programs.
  • Develop new funding options to maintain or expand VWA goals.
  • Lead fund raising, including membership drives and grant writing, in a meaning full and responsible way. Represent the VWA in public and through the media.
  • Relationship management as public face of VWA including collaboration, tact and judgment.
  • Complete the annual budget for submission to the Board, and provide the fiscal oversight to keep within the budget. Perform timely and accurate documentation for quarterly reports and status reports required by outside agencies.
  • Attend all monthly Board meetings and maintain positive communication with the Board on all issues.
  • Manage a small but potentially growing staff (currently two part time positions). Review future staffing needs with the Board for current and future projects. Handle all aspects of human resources including job descriptions and annual staff reviews.
  • Be able to coordinate the activities of up to 350 volunteers at VWA events to maintain safety and insure that volunteer experience is rewarding.
  • Promote the cause of the organization within the community, coordinate our activities with other groups including, non-profits, businesses, neighborhood groups and government agencies.
  • Budget management.

Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s degree with an environmental emphasis.
  • At least 5 years’ related experience with at least 2 years working in a management position. Non-profit experience is a plus.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
  • Strong leader who is able to recruit, train and motivate staff and volunteers.
  • Ability to maintain a strong relationship and open communication with the Board of Directors.
  • Strong project management skills.
  • Ability to read and write reports, business correspondence and other written materials.
  • Adept at use of technology including Microsoft Office Word, Excel and PowerPoint. Ability to use social networking to effectively and graphics programs to promote VWA is a plus.

Hours:

Full-time/ Exempt, 40 hours per week. Additional evening and weekend hours as required for VWA outreach and events.

Compensation:

The Vancouver Watersheds Alliance is offering a base pay of $47,000 – 54,000 per year determined on experience plus benefits with room to grow based on performance.
