The West Sound Wildlife Shelter provides injured, orphaned, and sick wild animals a second chance at life and promotes the well-being of wildlife through public outreach, education, and involvement.

The Shelter began organically at a private home in response to a clear need: Injured, orphaned, and sick wildlife on Bainbridge Island had no one to care for them. Since the Shelter began to professionalize its operations in 1999, it has moved to five acres of land, built state-of-the-

art facilities, begun a successful live-animal education program, greatly expanded the public’s awareness and support of its services as the only wildlife hospital in the western Puget Sound, and significantly increased its capacity to care for wild animals in need.

Between 2004 and 2012, West Sound Wildlife increased its annual operating budget from $65,000 to $400,000, grew its staff from 1.5 FTEs to 6 FTEs, completed a $600,000 capital campaign, and invested over $1 million in its facilities. In 2012, West Sound Wildlife cared for over 1,000 wild animal patients (a nearly 100% increase over 2004), gave educational presentations to nearly 5,000 kids and adults, and helped more than 1,000 people humanely resolve conflicts with wild animals.

Our desire to provide the best possible care to our patients and promote the protection of wild animals (directly and through protection of their environments) drives everything we do and is the rationale for our ambitious growth and improvement agendas. The Shelter intends to become a leader in the evolving field of wildlife rehabilitation and protection.
