This position is located in the Mapping and Automation Section, Office of Leasing and Plans. If selected for this position, you will serve as a Geographic Information System (GIS) Specialist developing, maintaining, and updating high-quality GIS-derived spatial data, maps, tables, graphs, non-spatial databases, charts, metadata, and special GIS projects. You will develop and maintain up-to-date digital data sets and metadata using Bureau standard databases and GIS utilities. You will compile spatial and non-spatial data from a variety of sources including the use of complex SQL queries on Bureau data sets and data sets from non-Bureau sources. You will work independently and within a team environment to create GIS products using ESRI’s GIS software suite. Project preparation includes working with a wide variety of disciplines and subject matter experts to define outputs and requirements and you will work with others GIS specialist to translate requirements into solutions. You will develop spatial data overlays and comparisons, perform geospatial analysis, and develop and maintain links between various databases. You may be called upon to automate certain business processes and create custom applications using macros and scripting languages such as Visual Basic, SML, Python, and Avenue.

Major Duties (The duties described reflect the full performance level of this position.)
The major duties of this position include, but are not limited to the following:
• Develop maps and analyses required to prepare for OCS (Outer Continental Shelf) lease sales and all graphics and visuals needed to support sale day activities
• Use geographic information system (GIS) and other spatial analysis tools to assess the potential impacts of OCS activities on Gulf of Mexico environmental resources
• Compose effective graphical renderings to show complex and textured relationships, recognize data gaps, and analytical inconsistencies or anomalies in Bureau data sets
• Ensure contracted deliverables requiring GIS outputs are usable to the Bureau. Establish acceptance criteria for contracted spatial outputs
• Advise staff and management on GIS-related topics and communicate effectively on technical and administrative matters
