This position performs a variety of entry-level, professional GIS tasks associated with the development, maintenance, and distribution of Metro’s Regional Land Information System (RLIS). The position also supports Metro departments, other jurisdictions, and the general public with GIS products and analysis. Supervision is provided by the DRC Client Services Supervisor.

This position is limited duration until June 30th 2013.

The Assistant GIS Specialist classification is distinguished by the performance of entry-level professional assignments under close supervision or clearly defined direction.
An employee in this classification may perform any of the following duties. However, these examples do not include all the specific tasks that an employee in this classification may be expected to perform.

  • Produce standard and custom maps using ArcGIS 10 software.
  • Utilize ArcGIS 10 software to develop, edit, analyze, and publish RLIS data.
  • Coordinate with Operations team on project deliverables.
  • Update metadata, document procedures, and follow quality control routines.
  • Edit and run automation scripts (i.e. Python, ArcPy, ModelBuilder).
  • Exchange data and respond to request from RLIS data partners and clients.
  • Perform other related duties as assigned.
Minimum Requirements:
Requires a Bachelor’s degree in Land Use Planning, Geography, Computer Science, Economics or a related field, and one year related experience; or any combination of education and experience that would provide the applicant with the desired skills, knowledge and ability required to perform the job. Other requirements include, but are not limited to:

  • Basic knowledge of Geographic Information Systems.
  • Basic knowledge of mathematics including statistics and quantitative and qualitative analyses.
  • Basic knowledge of computer programs used to map, or to analyze specific physical or biological information.
  • Basic Knowledge of web/internet technology.
  • Ability to show tact when dealing with angry members of the public.
  • Ability to communicate verbally and in writing with a variety of people to answer questions and explain information.
