Field Technician Position – Freshwater Mussel Surveys

Location: Middle Fork John Day River, Oregon (about 2 hours south of Pendleton, OR)

Dates: July-August 2011

Job Description: Field assistant needed to help graduate student conduct visual snorkel surveys of freshwater mussels and habitat characteristics for approximately two months during low flow conditions. Assistant will be trained in species identification, habitat survey techniques, and water safety.

Work Conditions: All field sites are accessible by vehicle and short walks to the river. Survey work is dependent on low flow conditions and is currently projected to take place from July 1 to August 26 with a flexible schedule (i.e., 10 days on, 4 days off). Willingness to work long hours in the field in and around water is required. Accommodations will be camping at US Forest Service campground near Galena, Oregon, so having your own camping equipment (tent, sleeping bag, etc.) is a plus. Snorkel equipment and wetsuit/drysuit will be provided.

Benefits: Pay is $10/hr. Exceptional work will be rewarded with increased pay. Food and camping will also be paid. This is a great opportunity to experience aquatic field work and to see freshwater ecosystems in action.
