Winter 2016 Independent Learning Contract

Selemat datang, winter quarter!

Winter is that time of year in Olympia, WA where Evergreen students can be found hunched over in the library with their canteens of soup studying for hours because they don’t want to go home and make a fire in their woodburning stove. The rain feels more like a wet blanket in the sky and everyone returns inwards. The only similarity here in Bali is that the rainy season is making everything moldy. However, the sun shines bright when the rain clouds return to their place over the deep ocean, the mosquitos are in their prime, and I’m exchanging hot tea for coconut water this year. I simply can not complain.

My ILC for Winter quarter remains one foot in Student Village, with the other foot stretched way across the bridge over at Green School. I am ecstatic at the opportunity to co-teach middle and high school art classes with Ibu Jen.

This contract is divided into 3 parts:

-4 credits will focus on my role as supervisor at Student Village. This role includes operational duties, mentorship, and helping to educate and maintain sustainable living practices on-site.
-4 credits will focus on my case study as a field journalist documenting the terroir of Bali.
-4 credits will focus on gaining work experience as an intern with the arts department at Green School. I will be helping to find sustainable art supplies for the studio, as well as gain experience instructing high school students in an open art studio.

LEARNING OBJECTIVES:

To develop my case study as a field journalist documenting the terroir of Bali.
To gain teaching experience working in the arts department at Green School.
To continue my role as supervisor and student mentor at Student Village.

ACTIVITIES:

-I will help develop an herb garden with local Balinese kids at Student Village. The garden will serve as an educational space for them to learn about their cultural heritage.
– I will continue to document the terroir of local food, specifically fruits and rice.
-I will facilitate 2 classes with Ibu Jen, the middle and high school arts teacher at Green School: One class, Eco Art, is devoted to finding sustainable art supplies in the studio. I will help Ibu Jen discover, source, and demonstrate these solutions to the students. The other class is an open art studio for middle and high schoolers. I will act as both instructor and student, working on my own projects alongside them while providing feedback and instruction.
-I will continue to live with the girl residents at Student Village.
-I will continue to facilitate a weekly Community Day that focuses on food sovereignty, sustainability, or other fun activities that arise.
-I will assist Eduardo in all operations of Student Village including: transportation, menu planning, communicating with parents, organizing health and safety documents, writing and editing for e-mails and weekly newsletters, planning trips, mentoring the students, and being a positive role model in all aspects of sustainable living.
