I just finished watching the film tonight, and I think I’m still processing the emotions it left me with. Justin Chon, who wrote, directed and starred in his film Gook, did an amazing job of capturing the absolute chaos and heart break that Las Angeles riots unleashed in April of 1992. The black and white shaky cinematography is gritty and sets the perfect mood for the roller coaster ride of a day Chon takes the viewer on. South Central explodes into a viscous tornado of hatred and confusion, as judges acquitted the officers in the Rodney King trials. Leaving two families intertwined in a web of love, hate, and greed.
I don’t want to spoil the film for anyone, but prepare yourself for a bunch of laughs and some tears. Been a long time since I’ve watch a movie that made me laugh my ass off, only to bring me to tears and leave me needing a hug.
I think I’m gonna have to come back to this post later. I’m still in awe.
