Evergreen Launches New Athletics Website

OLYMPIA, Wash. – Entering a new digital era, the Evergreen Geoducks are proud to announce the launch of www.gogeoducks.com.  The site launched Thursday and will be the new home for Geoduck fans to follow their favorite teams.

“Our fans and student-athletes have been asking for a more dynamic presence on the website for years and we are excited to finally be able to provide that,” said sports information director Chris Thompson.

Evergreen teamed up with Sidearm Sports to design the site, which will feature new photo and video content.  The site also features an easy to easy adaptive site for tablets and phones.

The Geoducks are the ninth of 10 schools in the Cascade Conference to launch a site with Sidearm, who also hosts the site for the CCC.  A total of 742 schools across North America currently work with Sidearm to host their athletic website.

While the site is launched and ready to go for the fall, fans should check in often as new content is expected to be added on a regular basis.

Espinoza Recognized As CCC Champion of Character

LA GRANDE, Ore. – In recognition of his dedication to his team, his school and his community, senior men’s soccer player Brady Espinoza (Pasco, Wash./Pasco HS) has been named Cascade Conference Champions of Character award winner as announced by the conference on Monday morning.

Espinoza spent the summer of 2013 working with the Gateways for Incarcerated Youth Program, mentoring youth in a Juvenile Detention facility with the hope of supporting the youth so they can successfully move into the classroom upon release.

He also worked on a group project to design and build a crossfit space in the Costantino Recreation Center on campus.  The 2012 CCC Men’s Soccer Defender of the Year has been engaged on campus, in the community and as a student-athlete during his two years at Evergreen.

In addition to Espinoza being honored, Northwest Christian senior volleyball player Janel Fetters and Concordia senior men’s basketball player Anthony Holton were honored by the conference for their commitment to the NAIA’s Champions of Character initiative.

The Champions of Character program helps participants find the balance by keeping five core values  – integrity, respect, responsibility, sportsmanship, and servant leadership – at the heart of the athletics experience.

Students learn to understand how the values play out in both practice and competition. Coaches are taught how to intentionally define, model, shape and reinforce the values through their coaching and mentoring. Parents learn how their behavior is key to supporting their athletes.

For more than a decade, Champions of Character has been making a difference in developing athletes, coaches and parents of character.

Evergreen Selects Malroy to Lead Men’s Basketball Program

OLYMPIA, Wash. – After a nationwide search, The Evergreen State College has selected Tim Malroy as the fifth head men’s basketball coach in school history.

“We were blessed with a very large number of applicants, and we had an outstanding finalist pool.  Tim emerged from that strong field as the best fit for Evergreen,” said Matt Newman, Director of Recreation and Athletics. “He’s a seasoned and successful coach and educator, and we look forward to him mentoring our student-athletes and building a competitive men’s basketball program.”

Malroy. a 1985 graduate of Olympia High School,  comes to Evergreen from Green River Community College in Auburn, Wash., where he has served as head men’s basketball coach since 2004-05.  Prior to GRCC, he was the head women’s coach at South Puget Sound Community College for three seasons.

“I am honored to have been chosen to lead the men’s basketball program at Evergreen,” said Malroy. “I intend to bring in athletes that want to compete and sacrifice for their team, students that want to learn and better their future, and young men who are community conscious and servant leaders. I am excited to come back home and begin a new chapter in my life and career. Dig Deep Geoducks!”

A 1989 graduate of Western Washington University, Malroy played for Brad Jackson from 1985-87 before earning his Bachelor of Arts in psychology.  He later earned his Master of Science in sports psychology in 2000 and is currently pursuing a Ph.D. in sport and performance psychology through Grand Canyon University.

He is expected to start at Evergreen in early June. The Geoducks went 4-21 in 2013-14, finishing in a tie for ninth place in the Cascade Conference with a record of 3-15.

“My sincerest thanks to Monica Heuer and the entire search committee, they put in a lot of hours and provided excellent feedback on all of the candidates,” added Newman.

OLYMPIA, Wash. – On a night that honored all the achievements within The Evergreen State College Department of Recreation and Athletics, the Geoducks inducted the second class of the Recreation and Athletics Hall of Fame.

Joining the inaugural class of 2012 were US Soccer paralympian Josh Blue, former men’s basketball player Troy Torbert and former men’s soccer coach Arno Zoske.

Josh Blue ‘01

Arno Zoske

The second head coach in Evergreen men’s soccer history, Arno arrived on campus following a journey that should be on the big screen.  Born in 1939, his family escaped Eastern Germany and eventually immigrated to the United State in 1956.  He served as athletic trainer for the University of Notre Dame basketball team under Digger Phelps before moving to Washington to start a soccer coaching career. After stints at Tacoma CC and Pacific Lutheran, he arrived at Evergreen in 1983, earning 93 wins in 12 seasons at the helm of the Geoducks.

In addition to the hall of fame inductions, the Geoducks also handed out a number of awards, including Male and Female Athletes of the Year.

In the preliminary heats of the men’s 800m run, Jones briefly led on the backstretch of the second lap but began to made with about 200m to run as he was unable to make the finals, finishing fifth in the heat with a time of 1:53.88.  His time placed him 19th overall among 33 runners.

Competing in the event for just the third time this season, Johnson opened up his first NAIA Outdoor Track and Field Championships in the men’s long jump.

After fouling on his first two jumps, Johnson managed a clean jump on his third attempt, travelling 6.68m (21-11.0) to miss the finals by just two spots, finishing in 11th place overall.  Wayland Baptist junior Wayne Northover won the national title in the event, jumping 7.42m (24-4.25) on his first jump of the final round.
