Geoducks Complete Season Sweep of Knights

PORTLAND, Ore. – For the first time since 2010, the Evergreen Geoducks collected a Cascade Conference season sweep, dispatching the Warner Pacific Knights in four sets in a CCC volleyball match on Friday night at C.C. Perry Gymnasium in Portland, Ore.

The two squads kept things tight all night and the first set wasn’t any different.  With the Knights up 19-17 late, the Geoducks rallied to collect the 25-23 set one win.

Warner Pacific headed into the second set determined to get off to a quick start and it looked early like the Knights might be able to do just that.  Evergreen battled back to tie the set at 12-12 and the teams remained tight the rest of the way.

The Geoducks found themselves sitting at set point at 24-22 but WPC picked up a pair of quick points to tie the frame at 24-24.  After an Evergreen timeout, the gray-clad Geoducks forced a pair of WPC attack errors to take the 2-0 lead with a 26-24 set two win.

Early in the third set, it looked like the Geoducks would be headed towards their first sweep since 2008 but the Knight had other plans.  After Evergreen pushed the lead to 5-1, WPC battled back and the two squads played it tight, finding themselves tied at 18-18 late.  The Knights, determined to prevent the sweep, went on a 7-1 run to end the frame and earn the 25-19 set three win.

The fourth set looked a lot like the second set as Warner Pacific held the advantage early but the Geoducks were determined not to let victory slip away.  Down by a point a 14-13, the Geoducks went on a 6-0 run to pull ahead 19-14.  The Knights weren’t ready to lay down quite yet as a 10-3 run put them up by two at 24-22 but the Geoducks rattled off four straight points to earn the 26-24 win to clinch the match, three sets to one.

Evergreen was led by 13 kills each from Cassidy Watkins (Tucson, Ariz./Mountain View HS/Trevecca Nazarene Univ.) and Molly King (Centralia, Wash./Centralia HS/Tacoma CC).  CCC kills leader Victoria Love (Seaside, Calif./Seaside HS/Hartnell College) finished with 12 kills on the night while Kelsey Delagrange (Longview, Wash./Kelso HS/Mt. Hood CC) put up 44 assists on 51 total Evergreen kills.

Warner Pacific was led by 25 kills from Julia Toscano.  Mikaela Lisoski added 11 kills while Marchelle Bostic collected 53 assists on 58 WPC kills.  Brandy Velasquez led all players with 19 digs on the night.

The Geoducks will look to make it two in a row on Saturday night when they travel to 20th-ranked Concordia.  First serve with the Cavaliers is set for 7 p.m. in Portland, Ore.

Mounties Kick Past Geoducks, 4-0

OLYMPIA, Wash. – Sydney Nelson scored once and assisted on two others as the Eastern Oregon Mountaineers shutout the Evergreen Geoducks, 4-0, in a Cascade Conference women’s soccer match on Thursday afternoon on Evergreen Pitch in Olympia, Wash.

The Mountaineers (7-2-1, 3-2-0 CCC) got on the board in the 13th minute as Nelson put in a long ball from left of the box that snuck just inside the far post to give EOU the lead over the Geoducks (2-7-0, 1-3-0 CCC).  Eastern made it 2-0 in the 22nd minute after Tori Fedora powered in a cross and Mauriana Gonzalez one-touched a shot past Kaitlin MacKenzie (Lake Stevens, Wash./Lake Stevens HS/Shoreline CC) for her second goal of the season.

Eastern Oregon struck again in the 58th minute as Nelson sent a free kick into the box and Gonzalez gathered the ball from out of a scrum and fired it past Kyla Kitts (Renton, Wash./Kentridge HS/Highline CC) for the 3-0 lead.  The Mounties scored their final goal in the 62nd minute as Nelson took a corner kick that found the head of Carolyn Danek for her first goal of the season.

EOU held a 13-5 advantage on shots and a 4-3 advantage on corner kicks.  MacKenzie and Kitts each finished with two saves for the Geoducks while Kailey Moss made three saves for Eastern before being replaced by Jessica Parker in the 78th minute.

Geoducks Play to Scoreless Draw With #25 Warriors

OLYMPIA, Wash. – The 25th-ranked Corban Warriors have only left the field without a win twice on the season and both times have now come against the Evergreen Geoducks as the two teams played to a scoreless draw in a Cascade Conference men’s soccer game on Tuesday afternoon on Evergreen Pitch in Olympia, Wash.

The Warriors (9-0-2, 6-0-2 CCC) controlled the action early as Corban outshot Evergreen (4-5-3, 2-4-2 CCC) by a total of 6-2 in the first half, forcing Geoduck keeper Collin Harlow (Kirkland, Wash./Juanita HS/Shoreline CC) to make three saves to preserve the scoreless draw heading into halftime.

Corban again outshot the Geoducks, 8-5, in the second half but the Geoduck defense held tough as the two teams remained scoreless after 90 minutes played.

In the overtime periods, the Geoducks became the offensive aggressor as Evergreen was responsible for both shots in the first extra period but Corban keeper Jordan Farr did his job, making  a pair of saves to force a second overtime.

In the second overtime, both teams had an opportunity to get the game winner as Corban’s Eliseo Santana found himself with a chance from the top of the box in the 103rd minute but a Geoduck defender got in the way to start the transition down the field.

Evergreen nearly scored the game winner in the final minute as Willie Spurr (Seattle, Wash./Roosevelt HS) gathered a loose ball after a save but it slipped over the crossbar as the teams settled for the scoreless draw.

Both keepers had a strong game as Harlow finished with six saves while Farr made five saves as both players collected the shutout for their respective teams.

The match was also physical between the boxes as eight total yellow cards were shown, including four to each team.

Evergreen hits the road this weekend, traveling to Portland to take on Warner Pacific.  First kick is set for 1:00 p.m. at David Douglass High School.
