Geoducks Can’t Stop Yotes, 3-1

CALDWELL, Idaho – Knowing that they would be facing a tough opponent, the Evergreen Geoducks managed to break yet another long streak but couldn’t get another win, falling to the College of Idaho Yotes, 3-1, in a Cascade Conference volleyball match on Friday night at J.A,. Albertson Center in Caldwell, Idaho.

In the first set, the Geoducks kept it close as they only trailed by two at 8-6 but the Yotes used a 10-2 run to pull ahead by double-digits and the grey-clad Geoducks simply couldn’t battle back as C of I earned a 25-11 set one victory.

Things didn’t get any better for Evergreen in the second set as College of Idaho powered their way to a 15-2 lead.  The Yotes didn’t let off the gas, taking the second frame by a final of 25-10.

The highlight of the night for the Geoducks came in the third set as Evergreen broke a 56-set losing streak to the Yotes.  The visiting Geoducks held the lead for much of the frame but the Yotes managed to tie things up at 24.  Evergreen dug deep and threw down the final two points to take the third set, 26-24.

Evergreens’ luck ran out in the final set as C of I held a 14-1 lead before the Geoducks could even blink.  The Yotes continued to pile it on, clinching the match with a 25-9 set four win.

The Geoduck attack was led by seven kills from Natimia Barker-Doss (Tacoma, Wash./Wilson HS/Pierce College).  Kelsey Delagrange (Longview, Wash./Kelso HS/Mt. Hood CC) put up 21 assists in her season debut and Liza Domingo (Ka’a’awa, Hawai’I/Kahuku HS/Lower Columbia College) collected 21 digs in the loss.

College of Idaho was led by 15 kills from Liz Myers, who also had six blocks on the night.  Sofia Anxo added 12 kills while Kylee Nawahine added 10 kills on the match.  Janel Porter had 23 digs for the Yotes while Sierra Porter added 33 assists.  The Yotes threw down 50 kills on 129 attacks with just 19 errors for a .240 clip.

Evergreen returns to action on Saturday night when they visit 16th-ranked Eastern Oregon.  First serve with the Mountaineers is set for 7 p.m. at Quinn Coliseum in La Grande, Ore.

Geoducks Blank Bruins, 1-0

NEWBERG, Ore. – Junior Rayna Murphy (Longview, Wash./Mark Morris HS) scored her first goal of the year in the 10th minute and that was all it took to give the Evergreen Geoducks their first win of the year, holding off the George Fox Bruins, 1-0, in a non-conference women’s soccer match on Thursday night in Newberg, Ore.

Sophomore Anna Stump (Boone, N.C./Watauga HS) fed in a cross early in the match and Murphy finished the job from about 10 yards out to give the Geoducks the lead.  The Evergreen defense never was tested as the Geoducks took the lead into the break.

In the second half, Evergreen continued to control the match, outshooting the Bruins, 4-1, in the final 45 minutes.  Senior Kaitlin MacKenzie (Lake Stevens, Wash./Lake Stevens HS/Shoreline CC) made just one save to collect the shutout with the 1-0 Geoduck win.

After a pair of scrimmages, the Geoducks will travel up to Kirkland, Wash. on Sep. 20 to take on Northwest in a non-conference match, beginning at 2:30 p.m.

This Week In Geoduck Athletics

Cross Country
The Geoduck men head to Yakima on Saturday to open the season at the CWU Apple Ridge Run.  The expectations are high for the Evergreen men as they have been training hard all summer!

Men’s Soccer
Following a hard-fought 1-1 tie with 22nd-ranked Rocky Mountain on Saturday, the Geoducks hit the road for the first time this week as they travel to Parkland to take on Pacific Lutheran on Sunday at 2:30 p.m.

Women’s Soccer
The Geoducks will be at home again on Sunday afternoon, hosting Pacific (Ore.) at 2 p.m. on Evergreen Pitch (Field #4).  Come cheer on Evergreen as they take on the Boxers!

Volleyball
The Evergreen volleyball team makes their official home debut on Friday night as they open Cascade Conference play against Concordia.  The Geoducks will also be at home on Saturday night against Warner Pacific.  Both matches are set for 7 p.m. at CRC Gymnasium.

#23 Lutes Send Geoducks Home with Loss, 4-0

PARKLAND, Wash. – Hitting the road for the first time, the Evergreen Geoducks ran up against the 23rd-ranked Pacific Lutheran Lutes and it was the home squad earning the 4-0 win in a non-conference men’s soccer match on Sunday afternoon on West Field in Parkland, Wash.

The Lutes got on the board in the sixth minute as Giancarlo Santoro fed a ball in to Derek Johnson , who put the ball past Evergreen keeper Collin Harlow (Kirkland, Wash./Juanita HS/Shoreline CC).  PLU made it 2-0 before the half as Johnson scored again following a corner kick by Rigoberto Loreto.

Pacific Lutheran added two more quick goals in the early part of the second half.  Loreto scored an unassisted goal in the 53rd minute and then fed a ball to Brian Lefavour for a goal in the 56th minute.

PLU held a 12-4 advantage on shots as Willie Spurr (Seattle, Wash./Roosevelt HS) was the only Geoduck able to put the ball on frame.  Harlow finished with four saves on the afternoon and the Geoducks were whistled offsides three times, compared with once for the Lutes.

Evergreen heads to Oregon for the first time on Saturday afternoon when they take on Whitworth in a neutral site contest at Willamette.  First kick with the Pirates is set for 1 p.m. in Salem, Ore.

Boxers Punch Past Geoducks in Overtime, 2-1

OLYMPIA, Wash. – McKenna Davidson gathered the ball out of a scrum in overtime and put in the game winner in the 98th minute to give the Pacific Boxers a 2-1 win over the Evergreen Geoducks in a non-conference women’s soccer match on Sunday afternoon at Evergreen Pitch in Olympia, Wash.

The Boxers (2-0-1) got on the board in the 27th minute as Kara Lankey dribbled one-on-one with Evergreen keeper Kaitlin MacKenzie (Lake Stevens, Wash./Lake Stevens HS/Shoreline CC) before putting the ball in an empty net from close.  The score would stay at 1-0 heading in the half as Pacific held a 10-9 lead in shots.

The Geoducks (0-2-0) found the equalizer in the 66th minute as Kori Lerch (Chester, Va./Matoaca HS) sent in a perfect corner kick to the far post and Sophie Krauza (Las Vegas, Nev./Centennial HS) got a head on the ball to put it past Pacific keeper Kayla Davidson.

Still tied after regulation, the two squads went into overtime and the Geoducks nearly got the win in the 95th minute as freshman Vanessa Zamora (Vancouver, Wash./Hudsons Bay HS) fired in a shot from 20 yards out that found the post, giving the Boxers another shot.

Pacific took advantage of the opportunity as Holly Chang-Northway sent in a corner that found the middle of a large scrum in front of the net and Davidson came out with the ball, firing it in for the game-winner.

Pacific finished with a 17-13 advantage on shots.  Despite allowing the two goals, MacKenzie was strong in net for Evergreen, making seven saves on the afternoon.
