Owls Fly Past Geoducks, 5-0

KLAMATH FALLS, Ore. – Keeper Lauren Davidson (Seattle, Wash./Garfield HS) made 10 saves but it wasn’t enough as the Evergreen Geoducks fell to the Oregon Tech Owls, 5-0, in a Cascade Conference women’s soccer match on Saturday afternoon in Klamath Falls, Ore.

The Owls got on the board early as Rebekah Nisbet put in her second goal of the year in just the fifth minute to give OIT the 1-0 lead.  Oregon Tech made it 2-0 in the 26th minute as Hayley Smith fed in a ball to Rylee Jones, who chipped it over Davidson for the score.

After the halftime break, the Owls put in their third goal in the 51st minute as Nisbet crossed a ball to Hayley Smith, who put it past Davidson for the score.  Smith collected the brace in the 55th minute, this time on the assist from Melanie Johns as OIT pushed the lead to 4-0.

Oregon Tech scored their final goal in the 71st minute as A.J. Castle took a pass from Nisbet for the final goal of the match as the Owls earned the 5-0 win.  Evergreen was outshot, 31-6, on the match.

The Geoducks return to action next Friday afternoon when they play host to Northwest Christian in a match set for 4 p.m. at Evergreen Pitch in Olympia, Wash.

Evergreen Quintet Runs at Bowles Invitational

SALEM, Ore. – Taking part in one of the biggest meets in the Pacific Northwest, the Evergreen Geoducks sent five runners to the 38th annual Charles Bowles Invitational, hosted by Willamette University and contested at Bush Park in Salem, Ore.

On the men’s side, Aaron Jones (San Bruno, Calif./Capuchino HS) led the way for the third straight meet, taking 167th place with a time of 28:05.90, just 45 one-hundredths of a second behind Calvin Edward of Eastern Oregon.

Alec Messman (Lacey, Wash./River Ridge HS) was the next Geoduck across the line, taking 200th overall with a time of 29:13.99.  Les Jones (Tacoma, Wash./Mt. Tahoma HS) took 224th with a time of 30:53.69 while Drew Hawley (SeaTac, Wash./Mt. Rainier HS) rounded out the Evergreen men with a time of 33:03.47 to finish 240th.

The Gold race was won by Matthew Clowes, running unattached, with a time of 24:09.43. University of British Columbia and Concordia (Ore.) tied for first place, each finishing with 91 points on the meet.

On the women’s side, Ashley DiCristina (Prescott, Ariz./Brandshaw Mountain HS) was the only Geoduck to compete, taking 189th place with a time of 25:09.62.  Kimber Mattox took first individually, finishing in a time of 17:17.99. British Columbia took the women’s title with 64 points, edging out Everett Community College, who finished with 83.

In the Cardinal races, Lars Erik Malde took first in the men’s 8k with a time of 24:49.08 as his Portland Pilots also earned the men’s title with just 16 points, nearly 100 points better than second-place Boise State.  Amber Rozcicha of Portland State won the women’s 5k with a time of 17:46.70 while it was Oregon State taking the women’s team title with 28 points.

Evergreen will take a two-week break before their next meet.  On Oct. 13, the Geoducks will head back down to Oregon to take part in the Cascade Conference Preview Meet, hosted by Warner Pacific College in Portland, Ore.

Knights Knock Out Geoducks, 3-0

PORTLAND, Ore. – Taking advantage of playing at home, the Warner Pacific Knights swept past the Evergreen Geoducks, 25-16, 25-19, 25-20, in a Cascade Conference volleyball match on Friday at C.C. Perry Gymnasium in Portland, Ore.

The Knights took the early lead by using four service errors to take the first six points of the match.  Warner Pacific continued to maintain the lead for the rest of the frame as they earned the 25-16 win to take the early advantage.

Evergreen started set two much stronger as the Geoducks held an early 4-2 lead.  The Knight eventually took back the advantage as WPC snuck past the Geoducks for the 25-19 set two win as they extended their lead to 2-0.

It was Warner Pacific again taking the early lead in the final frame as the Geoducks found themselves down 24-13 but Evergreen dug deep and reeled off eight straight points before the Knights put down the match winner to take the third set, 25-20.

Evergreen was led by 11 kills from Cassidy Watkins (Tucson, Ariz./Trevecca Nazarene Univ.).  Sasha Nash (Sandy, Utah/Skyline HS) returned from injury to put up 24 assists while Sonja Arrasi-Nash (Sandy, Utah/Westminster College) added 13 digs in the losing effort.

Warner Pacific was led by 13 kills from Rylie Engelson and 10 from Devan Belshe.  Marchelle Bostic put up 23 assists in the win while Samantha Bryan defended the back row with 16 digs.

The Geoducks remain in the Rose City as they make the short trip to Concordia for their next match, set for tomorrow night at 7 p.m. at Cavalier Gym in Portland, Ore.

Geoducks Fall to SOU in CCC Opener, 1-0

ASHLAND, Ore. – Southern Oregon did not allow a single shot as the Raiders shut out Evergreen 1-0 in the Cascade Collegiate Conference women’s soccer opener for both teams Friday afternoon at University Field.

Southern Oregon improves to 5-3-1 overall and 1-0 in conference play, while Evergreen falls to 0-5-1 overall and 0-1 in the CCC. Both teams return to action Sunday, with the Raiders hosting Northwest at University Field at 12 p.m. and the Geoducks heading to Klamath Falls to face Oregon Tech.

The match remained scoreless throughout the first half, though not for lack of pressure from the SOU offense. Southern Oregon finished the half with 12 shots, forcing Evergreen goalkeeper Lauren Davidson to make four saves to keep it 0-0 into halftime.

Southern Oregon jumped on the board less than four minutes into the second period when Danielle Stave sent a corner kick to Stephanie Carr in front of the goal, and Carr headed it into the net for her eighth goal of the season. The senior forward now has 31 career goals, one shy of tying SOU’s career record.

The Raiders had a couple chances to add to their lead later in the period, but Davidson tallied four more saves in the second half to finish with eight in the match. Southern Oregon outshot Evergreen 26-0 overall and finished with 10 corner kicks to none for the Geoducks.

#25 Cavs Shutout Geoducks, 2-0, in First-Place Battle

PORTLAND, Ore. – With first place in the Cascade Conference on the line, it was the 25th-ranked Concordia Cavaliers who reigned victorious, defeating the Evergreen Geoducks, 2-0, in a CCC men’s soccer match on Tuesday evening at Hilken Community Stadium in Portland, Ore.

The Cavaliers got on the board in the 21st minute as Septi Danciu fed in a ball to the far post, allowing Sam Carmichael to finish the play for the goal.  Evergreen continued to fight for the remainder of the period as the Geoducks trailed by just one heading into the break.

Concordia doubled the lead in the 52nd minute as Gerrit Hamann corralled the ball as it bounced around the box, putting it past Collin Harlow (Kirkland, Wash./Shoreline CC) for the score.  Both teams kept pressing on offense but neither squad would manage a score the rest of the way as CU earned the win.

Concordia held a 15-7 advantage on shots, also earning six corners, compared with just two for the Geoducks.  Harlow, the defending CCC Defensive Player of the Week, made four saves for the green and white while Arne Niermann made a pair of saves to collect the shutout for the Cavs.

Despite the loss, the Geoducks remain in sole possession of second place in the conference standings after Warner Pacific defeated Northwest, 1-0, earlier in the day.

Evergreen will look to get back into the win column on Saturday afternoon when they head north to take on Northwest in a match scheduled for 3:30 p.m. in Kirkland, Wash.
