Warriors Take Long-Range Shootout over Geoducks, 98-85

OLYMPIA, Wash. – Combining for 27 three-pointers, the Lewis-Clark State Warriors came out victorious against the Evergreen Geoducks, 98-85, in a non-conference NAIA men’s basketball game on Saturday afternoon at CRC Gymnasium in Olympia, Wash.

The two squads matched up well early as neither team could build much of a lead.  Lewis-Clark State used an 11-4 run to build a seven-point lead as the Warriors remained in control the rest of the first half, taking a 43-35 lead into the break.

In the second half, LCSC pushed the lead into double-digits, holding a 22-point advantage at one point, but the Geoduck continued to play hard, using a three-pointer by Michael Potter (Ridgefield, Wash./Ridgefield HS) with 34 seconds left to pull within thirteen at 98-85.

Evergreen was led by 22 points from forward Marc Taylor (Boise, Idaho/Skyview HS/Edmonds CC).  Frankie Johnson (Renton, Wash./Hazen HS) added 20 points to go with 10 assists while Kyle Calhoun (Seattle, Wash./Hazen HS/Marshalltown CC) put up 14 points in the loss.  KJ Hong (Federal Way, Wash./Decatur HS/Shoreline CC) rounded out the Geoducks in double-digits with 11 points.

L-C State was led by a game-high 28 points from Utah State transfer E.J. Farris.  Robert Ellis and Brady Bagby each added 15 points while Jamaal Thomas put up 12 points in the win.  The Warriors made 15 three-pointers on the night, including seven from Farris.

The Geoducks return to Cascade Conference play next week when they travel to Corban on Friday night.  Tip with the Warriors is set for 7:30 p.m. at the C.E. Jeffers Sports Center in Salem, Ore.

Slow Start Dooms Geoducks in Loss to Loggers

OLYMPIA, Wash. – The Puget Sound Loggers scored the game’s first 10 points as the Evergreen Geoducks fell, 77-65, in a non-conference men’s basketball game on Wednesday night at CRC Gymnasium in Olympia, Wash.

Going nearly four minutes before getting on the scoreboard, the Geoducks (1-7) finally opened up their scoring on a three-pointer by sophomore Frankie Johnson (Renton, Wash./Hazen HS).  The Loggers (4-4) pushed the lead back into double digits just over halfway through the period but Evergreen cut the gap to just six heading into halftime, trailing 33-27.

In the second half, the Geoducks battled with the Loggers early but Puget Sound slowly began to pull the game out of reach as the differential was in double digits most of the period.  A free throw by Marc Taylor (Boise, Idaho/Skyview HS/Edmonds CC) with 53 seconds got Evergreen back within nine at 72-63 but it was too little, too late as Puget Sound earned the 77-65 win.

Evergreen was led by a game-high 21 points from Kyle Calhoun (Seattle, Wash./Hazen HS/Marshalltown CC).  Taylor picked up the double-double with 11 points and 11 rebounds while Johnson also added 11 in the loss.  The Geoducks shot well from the charity stripe, making 15-of-18 attempts for 83.3%.

Puget Sound was led by 16 points each from AJ Maw and Erin Barber.  Dan Cheledinas came off the bench to add 15 points while Rex Nelson finished with 14.  Nick Holden rounded out the Loggers in double-digits with 10 points.  UPS shot 50.9% on the night, making 29-of-57 attempts from the field.

The Geoducks will be back in action on Saturday afternoon as they host their final game of 2013 when they take on Lewis-Clark State. Tip with the Warriors is set for 4 p.m. at CRC Gymnasium in Olympia, Wash.

Wilson Triple-Double Leads No. 20 Yotes over Geoducks, 115-78

OLYMPIA, Wash. – College of Idaho guard Josh Wilson put up the Yotes’ first triple-double of the millennium as 20th-ranked C of I earned a 115-78 win over the Evergreen Geoducks in a Cascade Conference men’s basketball contest on Saturday night at CRC Gymnasium in Olympia, Wash.

The Yotes (10-4, 1-1 CCC) couldn’t be stopped early as the Geoducks (1-6, 0-2 CCC) found themselves down by 10 just a little over three minutes into the game.  The C of I lead hit 20 with 8:13 left in the first half as Taylor Pruett hit a jumper to put the lead at 40-20.  The advantage would be 63-39 heading into the halftime break.

College of Idaho’s high-tempo offense continued to work in the second half as the Yotes continued to pull away.  Seven different players would finish in double-digits for C of I as they earned the 115-78 win, their seventh straight over the Geoducks.

Evergreen was led by 14 points each from Marc Taylor (Boise, Idaho/Skyview HS/Edmonds CC) and Cameron Faison (Atlanta, Ga./Foster HS/West Valley College).  Kyle Calhoun (Seattle, Wash./Hazen HS/Marshalltown CC) added 13 points while KJ Hong (Federal Way, Wash./Decatur HS/Shoreline CC) added 12 off the bench.

College of Idaho was led by 19 points from Pruett.  Joe Vaz came off the bench to put up 15 points and nine rebounds.  Demetrius Perkins added 14 points while Wilson, Sydney Donaldson and Andrew Bruce each chalked up 13 points in the win.  Wilson added 11 assists and 10 rebounds to earn the triple-double.

The Geoducks will be back in action on Wednesday night when they host Puget Sound in the nightcap of a non-conference doubleheader.  Tip with the Loggers is set for 8:00 p.m. at CRC Gymnasium in Olympia, Wash.

Eastern Overpowers Evergreen, 73-54

OLYMPIA, Wash. – After going over six minutes without a field goal to start the game, the Eastern Oregon Mountaineers finally found their stroke, earning a 73-54 win over the Evergreen Geoducks in a Cascade Conference men’s basketball game on Friday night at CRC Gymnasium in Olympia, Wash.

The Geoducks (1-5, 0-1 CCC) came out sprinting, using a 10-1 run to open the game as Eastern Oregon (9-1, 1-0 CCC) didn’t hit their first field goal until the 13:48 mark in the opening half.  Unfortunately for Evergreen, once EOU found their shot, they kept hitting as the Mounties tied things up at 17-17 with 8:37 to go.  The EOU lead continued to grow, eventually hitting nine on a jumper by Craig Tucker with one second before halftime as Eastern took the 34-25 lead into the break.

Any shooting woes that Eastern may have had in the first half did not return in the second period as the Mounties continued to build the lead in the final half.  Eastern grabbed their biggest lead of the game with 1:09 left to play, using a free throw by Kevin Attila to go ahead by 21 at 71-50.

After a Geoduck three pointer by Jordan Rawls (Shoreline, Wash./Decatur HS/Peninsula CC) and a jumper by EOU’s Derek Maloney, Evergreen’s Charlie Holzman (Glenview, Ill./Glenbrook South HS) hit a free throw to score the final point of the game, giving Eastern Oregon the 73-54 win.

Evergreen was led by a game-high 22 points from Kyle Calhoun (Seattle, Wash./Hazen HS/Marshalltown CC).  Marc Taylor (Boise, Idaho/Skyview HS/Edmonds CC) was the next leading scorer for the Geoducks, putting up nine points and seven rebounds as Evergreen shot just 26.8% on the night, making 15-of-56 attempts.

Eastern Oregon was led by 17 points from Tony Eackles Jr.  Kyllian Wood added 14 points and 13 rebounds to earn the double-double.  Kalvin Johanson also earned the double-double, posting 12 points and 19 rebounds in the win.

The Geoducks will look to rebound on Saturday night when they host 20th-ranked College of Idaho.  Eastern Oregon will also be in action, traveling to Northwest in Kirkland, Wash.  Both games are set to tip at 7:30 p.m.

Geoducks Nearly Sink No. 22 Keelhaulers, 79-75

OLYMPIA, Wash. – In a game that featured 15 lead changes, the Evergreen Geoducks nearly picked up the upset win over the 22nd-ranked Cal Maritime Keelhaulers before falling 79-75 in a non-conference men’s basketball game on Sunday afternoon at CRC Gymnasium in Olympia, Wash.

The Geoducks (1-4) got off to a quick start as a jumper by Bryce Phillip (Spanaway, Wash./Bethel HS/Green River CC) and a three-pointer by Cody Peters (Oak Harbor, Wash./Coupeville HS/Western Oregon Univ.) gave Evergreen the early 5-0 lead.   The Keelhaulers (7-1) battled back, pulling ahead by as many as eight with 4:12 left to play but a 7-0 run to end the half gave Evergreen a one-point 37-36 halftime lead.

In the second half, both teams came out strong as the Geoducks continued to control the pace.  After the Keelhaulers took the lead back with 3:33 left to play, a three-pointer by Frankie Johnson (Renton, Wash./Hazen HS) gave Evergreen a brief lead with 1:44 left to play but Jaqui Wiley made a layup with 50 seconds left as the Keelhaulers held on for the 79-75 win.

Evergreen was led by 16 points from Johnson, who also added five assists.  Kyle Calhoun (Seattle, Wash./Hazen HS/Marshalltown CC) added 14 points while Peters finished with 12 on the afternoon.  Michael Potter (Ridgefield, Wash./Ridgefield HS) led the Geoduck bench with 10 points.  Marc Taylor (Boise, Idaho/Skyview HS/Edmonds CC) nearly collected the double-double with nine points and nine rebounds.

Cal Maritime was led by 26 points from Casey Healy, who also added a team-high eight rebounds.  Blaine Blaser and Erik Hanson each added 14 in the win while Wiley finished with 10 on the game.  The Keelhaulers shot 51.8%, making 29-of-56 attempts from the field.

Evergreen will be back in action on Dec. 6 when they host Eastern Oregon to open up Cascade Conference play.  Tip with the Mountaineers is set for 7:30 p.m. at CRC Gymnasium in Olympia, Wash.
