Evergreen Comes Back To Knock Off Knights, 2-1

PORTLAND, Ore. – After giving up a goal in the second minute, the Evergreen Geoducks put two goal on the board as they defeated the Warner Pacific Knights, 2-1, in a Cascade Conference women’s soccer match on Friday afternoon at David Douglas High School in Portland, Ore.

The Knights (1-13-0, 0-8-0 CCC) got on the board first as Anna Blakeslee fed in a cross to the front of the goal and Molly Klinkhammer shot it past Evergreen (2-10-1, 2-6-0 CCC) keeper Kaitlin MacKenzie (Lake Stevens, Wash./Shoreline CC) for the 1-0 advantage just 1:53 into the game.

Evergreen scored the equalizer in the 24th minute after Sophie Krauza (Las Vegas, Nev./Centennial HS) put in a cross to the far post and Leah Aragon (Colorado Springs, Colo./UC-Colorado Springs) tapped it in for her first goal of the year.

Less than 90 seconds before halftime, the Geoducks went ahead as Shani Ramento (Lakewood, Wash./Bellarmine Prep) sent in a free kick from 30 yards out into the goal as Evergreen took the 2-1 lead into the break.

After Evergreen outshot WPC, 9-4, in the first half, both teams managed four shots in the second half but both goalies did their jobs as Evergreen collected the 2-1 victory, their second win in a row.

MacKenzie earned the win for the Geoducks, making two saves on the match.  WPC keeper Lynzee Felder was kept busy, making six saves and allowing the two Evergreen goals in the loss.

The Geoducks wrap up the 2012 campaign on Sunday afternoon when they return to Portland to take on third-ranked Concordia in the CCC regular season finale for both schools.  First kick with the Cavs is set for 2 p.m.

Bed of Geoducks Named Bank of the Cascades Academic All-Conference

LA GRANDE, Ore. – Proving that they can take care of business in the classroom as well as in the athletic arena, eight Evergreen Geoducks have been named Bank of The Cascades Academic All-Conference, as announced by the Cascade Conference on Thursday.

Four different teams were represented for the Geoducks, led by three from men’s soccer, two from women’s soccer and volleyball and one cross country runner.

The playoff-bound men’s soccer team was led by juniors Kevin Flavin (Oak Harbor, Wash./Shoreline CC) and Mitch Treend (Vancouver, Wash./Heritage HS) and sophomore Caleb Phillips (Aberdeen, Wash./Aberdeen HS).

Senior Teresa Lopez (Yakima, Wash./Walla Walla CC) and sophomore Katie Hebien (Boulder, Colo./Boulder HS) represented the women’s soccer program.

Volleyball players Sonja Arrasi (Sandy, Utah/Westminster College) and Taylor Asao (Kaneohe, Hawaii/Saint Francis School) earned academic honors as did cross country runner Aaron Jones (San Bruno, Calif./Cappuchino HS).

A total of 227 Cascade Collegiate Conference student-athletes in the fall sports of men’s and women’s cross country, volleyball, and men’s and women’s soccer have earned Bank of the Cascades  Academic All-CCC honors for their performances in the classroom, the conference office announced.  To earn recognition as a CCC scholar-athlete, a student must have a minimum cumulative GPA of 3.2 and sophomore standing.

Geoducks Climb Past Mounties, 2-0, on Senior Day

OLYMPIA, Wash. – Taking the pitch for the final time at home, the Evergreen Geoducks earned their first win of 2012, defeating the Eastern Oregon Mountaineers, 2-0, in a Cascade Conference women’s soccer on Saturday afternoon at Evergreen Pitch in Olympia, Wash.

After a scoreless first half that saw EOU outshoot Evergreen, 7-3, the Geoducks went on the offensive in the second half and it paid off.  The Geoducks took the lead in the 73rd minute as junior Bianca Flores (Yakima, Wash./Yakima Valley CC) dribbled up the right and shot from about 25 yards out to beat EOU keeper Kailey Moss.

After the Mounties pressed forward and looked for the equalizer in the closing minutes, the Geoducks were able to take advantage of the extra space on offense as Sophie Krauza (Las Vegas, Nev./Centennial HS) crossed in a ball to Rayna Murphy (Longview, Wash./Mark Morris HS), who chipped it over Moss’s head for the 2-0 win.

Outshooting EOU 10-3 in the second half, the Geoducks finished with  13-10 advantage on shots.  Moss made four saves for the Mounties while Kaitlin MacKenzie (Lake Stevens, Wash./Shoreline CC) made three stops to collect the shutout.

The Geoducks hit the road next week  in the final weekend of play.  Evergreen will head to Portland, Ore. to take on Warner Pacific on Friday at David Douglas High School.

Yotes Dig Up Geoducks, 5-1

OLYMPIA, Wash. – Brittney Lacey scored twice as the College of Idaho Coyotes shot past the Evergreen Geoducks, 5-1, in a Cascade Conference women’s soccer match on Friday afternoon at Evergreen Pitch in Olympia, Wash.

The Yotes got on the board in the 18th minute after a foul by Evergreen in the box provided College of Idaho with a penalty kick and Lacey converted for the 1-0 lead.  C of I added another score shortly before halftime as Bri Blair sent in a corner in the 41st minute that found the forehead of Hallie Taufoou, who then directed the ball to the head of Jessica Ayala, who put it into the net for the 2-0 lead.

Evergreen finally responded in the 51st minute as Rayna Murphy (Longview, Wash./Mark Morris HS) dribbled up the left side and finished unassisted, firing the ball past C of I keeper Melissa Holmes-Joseph to cut the Yotes lead to 2-1.

It didn’t take much longer for the Yotes to build the lead back up to two goal as Sarah Hicks put a shot on net that was deflected over the head of Lauren Davidson for C of I’s third goal of the match.  College of Idaho continued to pull away in the 73rd minute as Lacey earned her second goal of the match, this time on the assist from Ayala, to push the lead to 4-1.  The final goal came in the 85th minute as Natasha Rooney sent a pass to McKenzie Anderson, who one-timed it from about 15 yards out for the score.

College of Idaho held a 16-11 advantage on shots, as well as a 4-3 advantage on corner kicks.  Holmes-Joseph finished with three saves for the Yotes before being replaced by Aimee Pierson in the 81st minute.  Kaitlin MacKenzie (Lake Stevens, Wash./Shoreline CC) had five first-half saves for the Geoducks while Davidson had one stop in the second half.

Evergreen wraps up the home portion of the 2012 schedule on Saturday when they play host to Eastern Oregon.  College of Idaho continues the road trip as they visit Northwest University in Kirkland, Wash.  Both matches are set for 3 p.m.

Northwest Blanks Evergreen, 4-0

 

KIRKLAND, Wash. – Northwest’s Acacia Johnson scored twice and assisted on two others to lead her Eagles over the Evergreen Geoducks, 4-0, in a Cascade Conference women’s soccer match on Friday afternoon at NU Soccer Field in Kirkland, Wash.

The Eagles got on the board for the first time in the 29th minute as Johnson fed in a ball to Shea Samuelsen, who finished from 10 yards out for the score.  Northwest made it 2-0 in the 37th minute as Johnson got her first of the match on the assist from Hannah Reeser.  It took just 71 seconds  for Johnson to get her second as she took a pass from Jessie Murphy and sent a lob over Kaitlin MacKenzie (Lake Stevens, Wash./Shoreline CC) for the 3-0 halftime lead.

After the break, the Eagles scored their final goal in the 59th minute as Johnson earned her sixth point and second assist of the afternoon, this time on a pass to Jordyn Wilson, who shot the ball past Lauren Davidson (Seattle, Wash./Garfield HS) for the 4-0 win.

Northwest held a 23-9 advantage on shots for the afternoon.  MacKenzie had three first-half saves while Davidson made five saves protecting the Geoduck net.  Mariah O’Brien made two saves to earn the shutout for Northwest.

The Geoducks return home next Friday when they play host to College of Idaho, beginning at 3 p.m.  Evergreen will then wrap up the home portion of the schedule on Saturday, Oct. 20 as they host Eastern Oregon in a CCC match, also set for 3 p.m. at Evergreen Pitch in Olympia, Wash.
