Evergreen Adds New Food Bank

We are pleased to announce the opening of a satellite location of the Thurston County Food Bank (TCFB) beginning Tuesday, April 9, from 4 to 6 pm in the Center for Community-Based Learning and Action (CCBLA) in Seminar II 2115.  This program is also being sponsored by the Division of Student Affairs and the Campus Food Coalition which is a student organization.

Members of the college community and residents of Thurston County will be able to obtain one bag of non-perishable basic food items intended to provide one week of assistance (vegetarian bags will be available by request) on Tuesdays from 4 to 6 pm in the CCBLA.  Individuals accessing this service will be asked to complete an intake form and provide identification if possible. Those who complete an intake form at Evergreen or another location of the TCFB are eligible for the service 15 times during the year from the Evergreen Satellite or any other location of the TCFB.  The impact of the Evergreen Satellite will be assessed toward the end of spring quarter in order to determine summer and fall continuation.

The Campus Food Pantry located in Police Services will continue to be open 24 hours a day, seven days a week. The Pantry will provide one or two items for immediate need.  Identification is not necessary to obtain items from the Pantry.

We encourage you to join us in continuing to address hunger in our local community. There are many ways to do so:

  • Volunteer to assist with the new Evergreen Satellite Food Bank or the Campus Food Pantry by e-mailing the CCBLA (ccbla@evergreen.edu)
  • Volunteer to assist the Thurston County Food Bank in Olympia by emailing the CCBLA (ccbla@evergreen.edu)  Volunteers are needed for the following:
    • Thurston County Food Bank Olympia Downtown Distribution
    • Thurston County Food Bank Gleaning Program
    • Thurston County Food Bank School Gardens Program
    •  Contribute nonperishable items directly to the TCFB or the Campus Food Pantry.
    • Make a financial contribution directly to the Thurston County Food Bank
    • Make a financial contribution through payroll deduction to the Thurston County Food Bank through the Combined Fund Drive (employees) by contacting Andrea Seabert Olsen (x5113).
    • Make a one-time financial contribution to the Campus Food Pantry or an ongoing contribution through payroll deduction by contacting Ed Sorger (x6155).

Employees are also invited to the annual Pancake Brunch and Auction on Friday, April 12, from 11:00-1:00 in Library 4300.  The net proceeds generated at the event will support the Campus Food Pantry.

We thank everyone who is trying to provide food in our community and especially the Thurston County Food Bank.
