That Time When Matt Groening Was On Portlandia

The Peabody Award winning satirical sketch comedy show, Portlandia, finished up its fifth season just a couple weeks ago. Episode 43 in the latest season was particularly notable for Evergreen.
The episode, titled “Fashion”, which aired on February 12, 2015, featured a guest star a few of us may know: Matt Groening ’77. Of course, Carrie Brownstein ’98 is one of the show’s two stars, and a co-creator, so for those of you who already watch the show this is just a fun blast to the past. But in this episode, jump straight to 19:15 (the scene starts at 18:25) to hear a mention of Matt Groening going to “Evergreen State”. Then, watch the whole episode, in which one of Fred Armisen’s characters, Spyke, faces trial for making unlicensed Bart Simpson merchandise.

  1. When I went to TESC, one of my roommates had found books in the library that had Simpson’s like sketches in it. We tried to make him turn it into Rare Books because we knew it was Groenigs’ but he didn’t. Evergreen spawns a weird breed, myself included! Great place for a path to adulthood for someone who doesn’t quite fit the mould though… Silly but important school. Stick to the serious classes with some fluff thrown in and you’re good from the learning side- until you try to get a Masters: The college doesn’t want to give you an equivalent GPA which is ridiculous and can grind your career to a halt. They should tell you they’re going to be so difficult. Lately there has been a lot of extra paperwork added to transcripts. Strange for the school to be so pedantic and make things so difficult for graduates but that’s the state worker way 😉
