POSITION DESCRIPTION
ECOSS has a unique grantwriting position for its environmental and sustainability programs. The
position has the responsibility to increase financial resources for the organization, with a primary
focus on grantwriting and proposal development, grant administration, and reporting. The person in
this position will also work collaboratively with other staff on fund development and
communications activities. Depending on experience, the person in this position could also spend
time on higher level fund development activities, including developing relationships with funders,
securing major gifts, and providing strategic direction for ECOSS’ development goals.
The selected candidate will report to ECOSS’ Associate Director and work closely with other
ECOSS staff and key stakeholders, including funders, government agencies, and partner
organizations.
About ECOSS
ECOSS is a community-based non-profit organization working to protect our region’s natural
resources, assist local businesses and provide information to residents. We provide multi-lingual,
environmentally-oriented education, technical resources, and other services that protect our
watershed, reduce pollution and hazardous wastes, conserve water and energy, and assist
property owners in cleaning up contaminated land. Founded in 1994, ECOSS arose from an
interest in creating a working partnership among different segments of our community—residents,
businesses, industry and government—to collaboratively address environmental and community
development needs of the South Park neighborhood in south Seattle. Today, ECOSS plays a lead
role in projects throughout the Puget Sound region as a trusted source of environmental education
and a link to sustainable resources.
PRIMARY JOB RESPONSIBILITIES
• Develop, compose, submit, and track grant proposals, both to private and government
funders
• Conduct prospect research and cultivate relationships for grant and other funding
opportunities
• Work closely with program staff to understand program needs and opportunities
• Manage multiple deadlines and tasks
• Communicate complex information in a professional and succinct manner
• Provide support for fund development, including planning and projections, working with the
Board fund development committee, and developing new fundraising initiatives
• Assist with ECOSS’ marketing, communications, and media projects

REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS:
The successful candidate must have:
• Minimum of 3 years grantwriting and/or fund development experience
• Thorough understanding of non-profit organizations (budgeting, management, and
organizational development)
• BA/BS in a related field (environment, public policy, non-profit management)
• Proven ability to raise at least $200,000 annually from a variety of sources
• Knowledge and passion about environmental, sustainability, and community development
issues
• Superior written and verbal communication skills
• Ability to work and communicate effectively with a wide range of constituents in diverse
communities
• Experience in project management and meeting facilitation
• Excellent administrative, time management and interpersonal skills
• Ability to work under multiple deadlines and be task-oriented; be organized and manage
personal workload
• Ability to work independently
• Strong creative writing and problem solving skills
• Excellent skills with Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, Powerpoint), database management
(DonorPerfect or similar) and be technology-savvy
PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS
• Experience in developing and implementing comprehensive fund development goals,
strategies, and plans
• Master’s degree in a related field (environment, policy, non-profit management)
• Outreach and media experience
• Proficiency in another language and/or exposure to multicultural communities
• Experience managing and supervising volunteers and interns
COMPENSATION
Salary commensurate with experience. Monthly reimbursement for health insurance and generous
