VOLUNTEER HELP NEEDED FOR PRAIRIE RESEARCH PROJECT

A multi-year prairie research project to develop treatments for restoring
native prairie communities in severely degraded areas needs volunteer monitoring assistance. The project specifically focuses on restoration of critical habitat components for four rare butterfly species (Taylor’s Checkerspot, Mardon Skipper, Puget Blue, and Valley Silverspot) and a rare plant (Golden Paintbrush) that historically occurred in these habitats and may be reestablished. By restoring compositional, structural, and functional components of these prairie systems, the project will also benefit many other species, common and rare, within the prairie ecosystem.

Volunteer work will primarily consist of recording plant species on data
sheets and assistance
with counting plants in research areas.

This is a great opportunity to support active research on Whidbey Island for
native habitat restoration and to learn native prairie species.

Volunteers are needed every day of the week from Monday to Friday from 9 am
to 3 pm beginning May 9th to June 15th.
