Many small woodland owners are interested in taking a more business-like approach to managing their forests. Through a careful inventory of forest resources, understanding the various timber and non-timber products a forest can yield, and identifying local resources such as mills, markets and technical assistance, small woodland owners can generate a residual income while enhancing the conservation values of their forest.
This workshop will introduce a range of tools, strategies and examples that forest owners can use to begin evaluating both management and small business options for their forests.
Topics will include:
- Case studies of small woodland entrepreneurs
- Forest Stewardship Council (FSC) certification and niche markets for “green” certified wood products
- Forest inventory and long-term planning
- Small business planning
- Low-impact harvesting, small-scale milling & value-added manufacturing
- Non-timber forest products
- Financial assistance programs for small woodland owners
Prior to the workshop, registrants will receive a copy of Northwest Certified Forestry’s new publication “Financing Stewardship Forestry: A Guide to Conservation-based Markets and Programs for Small Forest Landowners”. This guidebook provides an overview of a range of niche markets and conservation programs available to small woodland owners.
